There is a job opening in Fort Smith, MT. I know very little about the are except that it is remote, with very little 'city'. Anyone that could give me some insight as to what living there would be like, please share.

There's a small grocery store, fly shops, and plenty of trout. Cell coverage is spotty. My #1 piece of advice - don't run out of beer as you will have to drive to Hardin to buy more. No beer sales on the rez.

Are you married? Kids?

As stated, not much going on in Ft. Smith from social perspective. Big game hunting is a drive (non-tribal can't hunt big game). Fishing is great - and pheasant hunting is very good too.

So it really goes to the lifestyle you are looking for. I grew up in that country - and there's many times I wish to move back.

You are wise to do some research before making any decisions. I hope for your sake that one is not like some of the others I have been to. There is one about an hour from where I live and I would not take a job and move my family there no matter how much it paid. It's like going to another country when you cross into it. Others are not so bad.

Fort Smith would be an awesome place to own a drift boat for sure! I think it's got a decent location in relation to quality hunting and fishing activities.

If I was single and it wasn't long term heck ya. A year maybe two then I would need more to do. There's worse things in life than being a big horn rat!!!!

Not Bad Country!

We lived in Billings for 15 years, and spent many days on the Bighorn. I still miss the flyfishing for those big Browns. We used to knock them with rainbow colored Rapalas too. Down the river to the Yellowstone is the best waterfowling I've ever had too. We used to kill 100 geese every year after the end of rifle season, so basically the month of December. The hills between Hysham and Hardin hold some nice deer and now quite a few elk too. It ain't city! If you like city don't go. I think Eastern Montana is a great place to raise kids, in my opinion. The Yellowstone down there has good catfish. I could go on and on!

IMO the novelty of the BH river would wear off and you'd realize you're in a "town" on the rez and a long ways from anywhere. Pretty country but thats about it.

I agree. If you have to work, live, and raise a family, the river and surrounding country would be a portion of your life. Not your whole life.

It's a great place to grow up. I wouldn't have changed it for anything. Boating up above the dam, fishing the afterbay and the upper 13 - as well as the lower stretches of the river was great. Easy access for kids to get outside doing kid things.

Ft. Smith is on the rez, but it's not a bad place. Lots of great people (white & native). Let's just say it's easy to be a white person in Ft. Smith (compared to Lodge Grass or Crow). I always had more trouble dealing with a$$-hats fishing on the river than the locals.

to the OP - go ahead and PM me if you want more info.
