Why? I guess you could think that about a lot of things. I remember giving a heart surgeon a bid on some tricky finish trim years ago. He was up in arms about the cost. I told him I didn't know how to do heart surgery and wouldn't bitch about your bill if I needed it. He understood what I was getting at. mtmuley

They have some stupid unexplained fees. Adi in the CA 20% "tax" on top of the sales tax, it's way too spendy for this poor old guy.
I had a bushing in an electric steering motor shred itself. Brought it to the dealership and told em what it was, they came back with a quote for 700-some bucks. I then went to the parts department and bought the bushing for 75¢ and took an hour out of my night to fix it myself. That is ridiculous and inflated.
I understand more about why this fix is nearly a thousand, but I know for a fact that I could do this on my own for under a hundred if I still had my shop and a few hours of some evening
I won't hijack anymore. But some things just aren't worth me giving up my time for. I'm sure there are extreme instances like you describe, but I was mainly stating the fact that professionals should be paid as such. No matter the task. mtmuley

$200/hr at a dealership is nuts. I fully agree, professionals should be paid as such. But the dude working on the car is making about $30/hr in most cases. I have a really close friend who has been at the same dealership for 8 years now. It's crazy.
Idk what your billing rate is for a carpenter out there, but around here, its $65-$85/hr for a commercial job.
Maybe I'm out of touch, but I don't think it should cost low end attorney rates to have someone fix your car.
Boy, aint that the truth. Ive gone to buying Browning BLRs. All 3 of mine shoot 1" or better groups. In fact, just shot a 1.25" group at 200 yards with the stainless one

Just FYI, The hourly rate for attorneys in Orlando is around $450-600/hour.

Cat field service is $375.00 per hour portal to portal. Mechanic wages including all the benefits is well over $100.00 per hour.

Your friend needs a new job. Skilled high end residential (big difference from commercial work) carpenters where I am make a great living. And the money charged by any skilled person that does what you can't do yourself is justified. mtmuley
My guacamoles are free. I have two trees in my orchard. Fruits come on in Late Dec/Jan. Lula and Ora De Negro. The lula fruits are excellent. You cant beat having your own guacs.
