Thank you to all of you who share information on this forum. It has been invaluable to a new elk hunter like me.

I just got back from a Wyoming archery cow hunt with a friend of mine. This was the first hunt he had been on with his own tag and my first exposure to elk hunting period. What. An. Experience. We saw 7 different bulls, some of which were 6x6 and 7x6. Since we had no experience with calls we decided he would try spot and stalk.

We arrived in town early enough Sunday to run out to our hunting area and glass for a bit. We watched a huge bull chase 2 cows down a mountain into a little meadow where he bugled, raked trees, and wallowed. It was amazing. The next afternoon on his first stalk he got to within 30 yards of a cow and bull and was able to make a good shot. It was the most amazing outdoor experience of my life and I cannot wait to do it again. I'm planning on doing an OTC hunt in Colorado now to feed this new addiction.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your hunt, sounds like an awesome experience. I'm thinking about getting the same tag to go with my 'lope hunt next year, if other plans don't take higher priority.

Congratulations. That unit is great when it's not crawling with hunters. I killed my first elk there, too.

So happy to hear the stoke you got from the hunt. I will be doing my first cow elk this year and can't wait. Thanks for posting.

Great job! From a fellow Ohioan, hunting whitetail's was never the same for me after I began my yearly pilgrimage West. I'm curious if your stand hunting for our deer in a few weeks will seem boring to you after your elk adventure...

Thanks for all the kind comments and well wishes.

Coppermushroom,

I am fairly new to the archery game so I am looking forward to shooting a couple whitetails this fall with my bow. However, after my elk experience I have a hard time believing that any whitetail will be able to match the feeling of being in elk country. The animals, the country, the sense of being in the wild, all of it together was just great.
