First Buck

This sat in my archives for a long time. This was when I was a bit younger, and didn’t have the level of experience I do now, but at the time, my very good friend and coworker, Terry, was wanting to get into hunting and so we made a plan to do a quick trip together. We headed out for a new place and ended up both getting bucks on public land. They weren’t huge bucks, but it was a super fun experience, that we still laugh about to this day.

Would love to hear some of your stories about your first Buck…… Nothing quite like it, whether you’re a youngster or an adult, the feeling is pretty incredible.

My first buck was a little guy 52 years ago. We had very few deer back then and I was lucky to get anything. I was leaning against my Jeep eating potted meat and crackers when he stepped into an open spot about 75 yards away and I whacked him offhand with my open sighted .270.

Killed my first buck / deer in 1977. Little button buck with a 35# Bean Pearson recurve, Herters fiberglass arrow and a Bear Razorhead.
Weren't many deer around our part of Indiana in those days, killing a deer was a big deal.

1976. I was 15. I climbed the branches of a big oak tree and when it walked in I put a 12 gauge slug in him. My first deer ever. Almost stepped out without climbing down. My dad took care of it so I could make it to school on time. Found out years later that he carried a picture in his wallet of me with it. Paid for the taxidermy myself.
