My moose outfitter last year used something he called "Dude Dust"
Chain saw dust saturated in diesel. A couple of Tablespoons would start the woodstove under kindling, no paper.

He got ticked if anyone ran a chainsaw in camp without a blue tarp catching the shavings.

I use a sawdust coated in kerosene for my fireplace. Buy it at D&B. Paper scraps would eventually get caught in the top of my chimney.

Maybe I need to start a side business. I’ll mail you all chainsaw shaving. We get rid of them by the shovel full

Yep, get the smell of diesel on you when building a fire before going out to hunt.

Toilet paper roll full of dryer lint or all the wood shavings I get from wood working. I prefer the wood shavings.

Cotton balls covered in Vaseline hasn't failed me yet.

Every pack we own and my bino harness has a pocket with a few cotton balls soaked in Vaseline that are vacuum sealed and a 2nd lighter that is vacuum sealed.

I have used cotton balls and vaseline. For a better alternative I saw a YouTube video on making fire starters from makeup wipes with wax and charcoal lighter fluid . They end up as wax covered disc that you can stack in a metal pellet container or dip container. Pretty easy to make a batch ahead of time and throw in your pack.

Vaseline cotton balls and a Bic lighter.

The Vaseline can be dual purpose used if you get the monkey butt. It has for sure saved the day for me on more than 1 occasion! Lol

I have tried all kinds of fire starters and keep coming back to cotton balls and Vaseline. They just flat out work and are cheap to make.
