I'm terrible at field judging myself. I end up going after the one that looks the biggest compared to the rest. It's worked out for me so far!

I'm no measuring expert, but I put the tape to him and came in around the low 70's. Not bad for a South Dakota goat

Keep in mind:

A 15 inch buck has to have 50 inches of mass and prong to make 80.

A 16 inch buck has to have 48 inches of mass and prong to make 80.

Mass and prong, and if they don't have it, its tough to over-come with horn length.

B&C has set the minimums at a place where it takes a pretty special buck to net 80.

Thick bases and big prongs go a long way. I think too many of us focus on length, but you're 100% right, length is only a small piece of the equation

15 inch buck...mass of 7-7-4-3 and a 5 inch prong, gets you to 82 gross.
