Hey all,
3 of us are traveling out from east of the Mississippi, 1 from Illinois and two from Indiana for our first team Elk Hunt. We are traveling to SW Colorado for second season rifle. All three of us are avid backpackers, hunters, and conservationist, however with a year of planning and research under our belts, one question remains, tags.
We are coming out for a full two weeks, arriving 1 week prior to second season rifle. We will be utilizing the first week to to hike and glass our planned routes and to hopefully locate some bulls to stay on top of till second season opens.
The question is, should we come in with one tag or two?
My one hunting partner is absolutely purchasing an OTC tag but should I also? With it being a blessing to have so much time to scout, research, and just having two full weeks, I feel it would be a shame to not have a tag in my pocket as well. However, with it being our first elk hunt (and expecting to make a couple dozen mistakes) would I be foolish in spending that kind of money in the hopes of bagging two bulls on our first Elk hunt?
In general, for those of you that have experience with hunting parties, do you believe having that second tag is a wise decision?
Thank you so much in advance for any advice on this brain twisting dilemma!
David
