My parents are getting up there in age. As the thread suggests they were recently dropped from their prescription healthcare coverage.
Sadly it came at a time where one was getting a very expensive treatment that has been effective. So here is the question.

Has anyone gone through this and have suggestions that I can pass on to them?
My vent is that they have paid into insurance for a very long time and suddenly when they start using it they are dropped three months later. Seems very predatory!

Unfortunately, that is the health insurance model. Pay into it when you're young and healthy, start using it and you become too expensive. It's a travesty what healthcare has become in this country and no politician will do anything about it. My condolences. As Randy said, healthcare.gov is likely the only realistic option.

My .02.
Health Care costs are unreasonably expensive.
Prescription costs are also out of control.
Hospitals are required to take anyone for care regardless of insurance or not.
Hospitals raise costs to offset free health care.
The uninsured raise the cost for the rest.
Hospitals MUST maintain their PROFIT MARGIN.

I have not had, nor seen that experience.
They should be able to purchase a prescription add-on to their medicare during the medigap open enrollment period. Mine is for prescriptions, should be about $50/month. They do need a good Doctor(s) who will advocate for them with said insurance companies though.

My sister added Part G, and is a better route if the person has or may have serious issues. She spent 6 weeks in the hospital, 2 of those in intensive care. Total for the 6 weeks was over 1.5 million, and she paid $500 out of pocket. She continues to get very expensive infusions to delete her imune system, 2x/year and she pays a similar sum.
My daughter who has MS, gets similar bi annual infusions with a retail cost nearing $150,000 ea, and pays $0.00.

Insurance is far from a scam from what I have whitnessed.
