Give a little love to the fowlers out there. Pretty typical late season duck hunt for us.

Closes jan 8th then reopens from 14th-18th... Split season to stay within fed guideline for max days.

I just added a late season Montana hunt to my bucket list, but it's not for a species most associate Montana with. Mallards in your face is a feeling everyone should experience!

Gave it another go today, 3 Avian X blinds for 8 shooters, and two labs. Had fresh eggs and bacon in the blind..

Clear skies and cold temps meant the birds would fly later, but it was a beautiful sunrise.

About noon we had only shot one goose and with not a duck in the sky we decided to order pizza.. That was an interesting phone call but we managed to make it happen with gps coordinates. Still surprised dominoes was willing to do it..

Just as the pizzas arrived so did the ducks, the wind was not in our favor and the birds would pass right through the sun just as they came in range but with some aggressive calling we managed to fill 8 limits by 3:45..

Are most the the W. Montana hunts dry field with the Mallards coming this late in the year?

I hunted the pacific flyway for a few years and by this time the Mallards were much further south with the Pintails moving in.

Seems like our best field hunting for ducks is usually between Christmas and the end of the season. There are lots of springs and spring fed rivers around here that never freeze, lards seem to arrive late and stick around despite the weather. Not many pintails, especially late season. I think we are in a little bit of a dead zone between the pacific and central flyways here as far as variety of ducks. Plenty of mallards and geese though once the migration gets going. Up until Christmas most of our duck hunts are over water, but we do pick up a few while goose hunting.

That video shows more self control than I think i could muster. Heck of a hunt. Makes Arkansas look a little less impressive.
