Deer, float or sink?

Sink at first then float after about 2 hours. The gas builds up from the Rumen microbes fermenting.

August blacktails in Marin County...

I would think it would sink again after it exploded or the fishy's got to it letting the air out. I would also think the intial sink/float would depend on how much air it still had in its lungs.

Was hunting with my dad during archery season in Nevada. He shot a muley and it took off out into a lake. Swam out and floated just fine after it died. I think a lot of it may also do with there the animal is shot as well. But who knows that is just a thought on the ones that seem to sink at first.

Dunno we always got 'em out before they went that long. Would make sense though.

They float...like a cork! I hunt a swamp where I specifically leave the gut in them so I can float them out. They may initially sink, but once that gut gets a little bloated, they float!

Some may depend on the winter VS summer coat too. Deer hair is hollow, and also floats well. I would think a winter coated deer will float a lot more than a summer coat.

Had it happen last year. 4 yr old whitetail shot through both lungs with a 270 , sank like a rock in about four and a half ft of water.
