Colorado Unit 22, 21, 30,31, 32

Thank you for the insightful response elkduds, real classic. Notice that I was just asking if they had success....

Lower elk densities compared to other areas in the state. but there is a few quality bulls if you’re willing to get into some of the nasty canyons and are not afraid of some serious oak brush. The Pine Gulch fire back in 2020 changed a decent amount of that country but for the better in most regards. Not an easy hunt during archery whatsoever ever but there’s elk to be had. I recommend focusing on the last 10 days of season if your schedule allows it.
Thank you Coloradoboy. Outside of whitetail, I have only hunted MT high timber for muleys and eastern MT for antelope, and this area looks TOTALLY different. We are going for the last 8 or so days of the season, so it will be a rather short time frame to get it done but we are willing to get into the thick of it and hit it hard. We are happy to put a tag on any legal bull or even a cow. Most of my eScouting pins have led me to the unit 21/22 border as well as the SE corner of unit 22 around those big chunks of private. I might have to look down by the Pine Gulch fire area. Do you think focusing on any one of these units is better than the others, or would you avoid any of the 5 units? We are prepared to spike camp or base camp but there's so many roads, it seems like spike camping might not provide much of an advantage. Thoughts? Really appreciate the optimism when most of these forums are gloom n doom.

You’re welcome to message me

Maybe you are under estimating just how rough some of that country up there is. There are spots I've been where it may have been 4 miles between roads but we still were spike camping in 1 mile just due to how brutal of a hike it was to get that 1 mile in.

Thanks Seeth07, this is a good point. We are going to carry a light 2-3 day spike pack at all times. If we are on elk & away from the road, we do not want to leave them. So we will be prepared to spike at all times, but it just seems like with the amount of roads, there could be other hunters over any drainage. I appreciate the insight. I am just a greenhorn so this is great information and reaffirms our plan to be prepared to spike at all times.

Hey Duckhunt, fellow midwesterner! I hunt whitetail less than a couple hours from you, in that SW corner of WI. If you remember, we would love to hear how you do during muzzy season in 21. We plan to come in on the last day of muzz season just to avoid all the smoke poles. Wishing you the best of luck.

Small world! My property & house is about an hour north of Seneca (closer to the La Crosse area). I do most of my bow hunting there but also do some hunting at a family parcel closer to Prairie du Chien. I love the Mississippi River Valley area but a man can only do so much whitetail hunting before he get's drawn into western big game!

I know this is a few years old, a few of us are heading to the 21,22 area 2nd rifle this year. We are staying around Rangely. Any of you guys have any experience staying in Rangely? We made a last minute change of staying near Meeker due to the fire.
