I'm going to start gaining preference points for wyoming and colorado this year and was a bit confused about Colorado's preference/bonus point system when i've been researching it. Can you just apply for or buy a bonus point each year or do you have to apply for the license and front the entire fee. I'm just looking at starting to gain points for now. Also, if you have to apply for the actual tag every year, can you switch units from year to year based on changes in units without losing your points. Thanks.

Colorado has no hunting license, only the tag fee. As posted above, you must remit the entire fee up front. If you did not purchase any kind of hunting or fishing license in Colorado the previous year, an additional $25 on top of the application fee will be withheld from your refund.

Points are species specific, not unit specific. You may change the unit you are applying for from year to year. As stated, CO has a straight preference system, meaning that those with the highest number of preference points in the resident and non-resident allotments will draw the tags. Non-residents are guaranteed a percentage of limited tags in each deer and elk unit based on the difficulty of drawing that unit. For hunts that require 6 or more preference points for a resident to draw, the non-resident quota is 20%. For hunts requiring fewer points, the non-resident quota is 35%. There is no resident/non-resident quota for pronghorn, but rather a straight preference draw. Non-residents receive a total of 10% of all sheep, mountain goat and moose tags, with the units with non-resident tags available identified in the regulations each year.

Thanks for the info. guys. I appreciate it. I can't believe its taken me this long to start accumulating preference points for other states but better late than never i guess.
