ive never applied in colorado but am considering it. i know how preference points work in the draw but can someone explain how you purchase "just" a point for deer or elk? everything ive read seems to be running together due to several changes over the years. i know you have to purchase some sort of qualifying license, but i am not certain if you get refunded and what that costs. thanks

You purchase a small game license and then can purchase points for the year.

Yes you have to purchase a small game license to qualify to put in for the draw. After license and fees it’s a little over 100 bucks. There is preference point only codes in the book for each species (EP 999 99P) or something like that. Don’t quote me on that look in the big game brochure that should be coming out soon. None of this money is refunded.

You can also purchase a fall or spring OTC turkey tag instead of a small game license. It's slightly more expensive, but if you're hunting in the fall for big game you'd have the option to shoot a turkey too. Or if you want to make a trip out in the spring for scouting it could double as a turkey hunt!
