Hello all - few questions for those with experience selecting a GMU in Colorado for public land/DIY elk hunting. Myself and a friend are planning a DIY trip to Colorado for 2017. We are both non-residents, with no preference points. We are interested in hunting 1st rifle, but I am concerned about a situation in which only one of us draws a tag. Given that, we are also prepared to hunt 3rd rifle as well (dates are more preferable than 2nd).

*Any recommendations for GMU's with stronger than average odds for a non-resident to draw a tag in 1st rifle? I have scoured the draw results on the CPW website, but admittedly I am having a hard time processing and interpreting that much data.

*If we encountered a situation where we both applied for 1st rifle, and only one draws, can that person forfeit the tag for a preference point and then just buy an OTC 3rd rifle tag?

*As far as GMU's go, we are looking at 74, 75 and 751 quite closely, but I am also considering about a dozen others as well based simply on harvest data and public land access. Any prevailing opinions on these units?

I would also add that we are planned to hike / camp if we are able to go 1st season, and would probably make a judgment call on camping for 3rd season pending weather (given our limited experience).

Very much appreciate any insight that you all might be able to provide on any of my questions here. Planning has been very fun so far, but its challenging when you are both new and not familiar with the land. Thanks!

You could put in as a group so you will have the same draw results. Put in your 1st rifle unit as first choice and otc tag as refund option. If you draw great if not you get a point and a otc tag. Good luck if you look at NW Colorado shoot me a pm we archery hunt it every year.
