Anyone have 1st hand experience with the CO 76 3rd season bull elk hunt?

3rd in 76 is a gamble on weather. If the big snow comes early, 3rd is tough. 2nd and 3rd also get a lot of horse trailers and toy trailers from the guys living on the front range. Even with those issues, 3rd can be very good for fellows that make good use of their boots.

I haven’t hunted 76 for 3rd season elk specifically, but I have spent time in the unit hunting bighorn sheep, so I know some of the country. I’d be happy to help you dig into it and e-scout some areas before you head out this fall. Shoot me a DM if you want.

I live just East of GMU 76, and never hunted there as I don't put in for preference points much. What I've always heard from the area hunters here though, is that GMU 79 is next to 76. When the weather starts getting Winter like, and also the hunting pressure continues in 76, a lot of the herd migrates into 79. The hunters that do hunt in 79, do so in the later seasons to take advantage of this. I don't know your circumstances, but if it were me going for a 76 tag, I'd find a way to hunt it earlier in the season. I enjoy helping others and using my pack animals if people need help....
