The most disturbing change I have seen over the past 50 years is the tendancy of hunters to group in areas. When I lived in Washington, it was common to see 10-15 trucks parked together at access points. Growing up in Montana, we typically would look for another hunting spot if 1 vehicle was parked at a usual location. The Madison river is disgusting enough in the summer with fishermen every 20 ft down both sides plus outfitters in boats floating through the lines.

With the invasion of people from the coasts into the Montana cities and especially Bozeman, I'm finding access points with 8-10 vehicles where normal is 1-3. In my areas they are mostly from Bozeman. The concept of holding hands like search parties or dodging bullets in hunting areas is a bit hard to adjust to.

I just hunt farther back and there isn't anything to be done about it but it is an unfavorable change. Kind of like setting up in a park at daylight by yourself and having 10 strangers sit next to you. Hunting etiquete if there is such a thing? Manners?

I always go deep and hardly ever see another hunter but when I do I go over and introduce myself and chat. Those are the guys you want to talk to right. I ask where they’re headed and if in the same direction we might hunt together. A you take that side I’ll take this one. We may prod an animal to one another, who knows. Or I’ll just go another way or they will. Never had a bad encounter in the back country. Most wont get more than half mile off the road.
