I am looking for some advise on a new lens for my wifes Canon T2i. Right now she is just running the "stock" EFS 18-55mm. Mainly she is using the camera for portrait shots of the kids and misc. photos. I am happy for her to have a hobby that she really enjoys so I would like her to be able to make the most of it. Is there a better piece of glass out there for this type of use? Something with a little more zoom would be nice but nothing crazy is needed.

I have a budget of $500-$1,000 to help her out with her hobby.

Thanks for any help guys, it is much appreciated.

You're headed down a slippery slope, you can spend a lot fast on lenses. I would look first at where she needs to use the new lens, if it's the kids soccer or football then Canon's 70-300 f/4-5.6 is a good lens at about $540. If you want to step up in quality over that lens then maybe Canon's 70-200 f/4 L IS, but price goes around $1,180. Those are both good outdoor lenses, but if it's needed indoors (basketball, dance, etc.) you'll need a faster lens and price can become an issue quickly. Sigma makes a 24-70 f/2.8 for about $900 and the same lens from Canon (higher quality glass) in an "L" series is $1,250, but beware 70mm for sports isn't very much zoom. I've tried for years to talk myself into Canon's 70-200 f/2.8 L IS to cover stuff indoors and outdoors, but at $2,150 I quickly realize I'm not that good at my hobby. I wish I could help more & good luck!

Best I own is the 100-400L but for portrait something like the 24-70L(or one of the 3rd party like Tamron). I have a Tamron macro prime that is just as quality as the comparable Canon L.

Search the classifieds on FredMiranda.com or photography on the net. You can check ebay too, but you never know for sure, with the photo forums at least it's a photog thats selling.

Here are some choices from B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Price_$1000+to+$1499.99&ci=8004&N=4232860665+4293918139
