I was talking to a buddy this weekend who is almost as extreme as some of you when it comes to hiking the backcountry. He was telling me that before he starts a long downhiller that he re-laces his boots to to give a little more room in the foot area and snugs up the ankles. So, fact or fiction?

Do a google search on lacing boots, and you'll probably get 100 video clips on the "right way" to tie your shoes...

I learned how to tie my shoes when I was about 4, and haven't needed to try anything different since. I have pretty tough feet though, and always have good foot wear.

The whole shoe lacing thing seems to be the latest trend in "I know more than you"...

I lace mine up early in the morning, usually sober, then I don't change them again all day no matter what I'm doing.

We've disagreed on this before.

I'm a believer that lacing can change how boots fit and you can use different lacing to alleviate hot spots.

But, I'm an Eastern tenderfoot.

I couldn't agree more!

I have some Kevlar impregnated bootlaces that are made for firefighting boots. I feel they don't stretch as much as the nylon laces (generally the ones that come with the boot) and that helps a lot in keeping my boots the right tightness. Not to mention they are less apt to break when you need them.

I've seen a few videos of ways to lace your boots and tighten them fancily and I'm not necessarily sold but I'll admit that I've never tried different techniques.

Nice to see everybody with upper level educations chimed in. It just comes down to what we have learned growing up in the mountains or on the internet. Everybody to their own. I just thought I would throw this out there, so now I have all the answers. Kevlar it is, then.

Once the laces that came with my Asolo boots fell apart, I replaced them with laces I made from p-cord (the inner strands removed). Seems to me that this setup requires less adjustment during the day, and they are tough.

I too am a believer that lacing can change how boots fit and feel.
AND I too am an Eastern tenderfoot - anyone see a pattern?

Although, I am the only one I know that laces my boots different. I've demonstrated different techniques to friends and family but I don't think any of them have ever tried it...
