One of the basic concepts in casting is that the retriever should expect to
change direction with each cast
after the whistle stop.
(Most cast-refusals are where the dog refuses to change direction)

I like this little drill to teach and maintain that concept.
Each cast is a successful cast. Each cast is to a new location from a new origin.
All that is required is 2 bumpers.

The nuances in handling retrievers are fascinating. More cast/less cast based off terrain, obstacles, personal dogs idiosyncrasies (I.e., water seeking vs water avoiding), verbal vs non-verbal, the list goes on and on. Loved that aspect, a good handler is almost as fun to watch as the dog. A bad handler IS more fun to watch. If time and money were no object I would absolutely be back in to it.
