Montana hunting history highlighted in new exhibit at the Montana Historical Society.

“What was special about Montana’s hunting heritage seemed to come back to connection with the land, the amazing wild settings and wildlife and connections with each other, with families and friends going out on annual hunts together and continuing a tradition,” Ordon said.

The exhibit traces hunting history back 15,000 years, with Ice Age nomads bringing down huge mammals with heavy spears. That gave way to the atlatl, used to hurl spears with smaller points with greater velocity.

“If we’re doing an exhibit on hunting in Montana, there’s thousands of years of history here,” Ordon said. “We wanted it to be connected in one narrative, even with the changes that come in time. It has the thread of hunting big game, cultural identity and social connections.”...

Montana’s hunting heritage is rooted in our changing relationship with the land and wildlife, curators wrote. The exhibit ends with a question: “How do you imagine the future of hunting in Montana?

Good question!

I wish I would have known about this last week when we were in town. We took the kids by to see the state capitol. I would have liked to see this exhibit. I see it will run for a year. Maybe we will be back before then. Thanks for the heads up.
