I am a ks resident, and I've never chased mulies.

I am thinking that next year I would love to get out and try it! I can bowhunt or rifle hunt.

Balancing odds of shot opportunities, and modest budget, what might you guys recommend?

Try and find a resident ks hunt?
Head out west/ SW?

Any input at all would be great!!! I'm sure it's too late to buy a point this year in KS or otherwise.

As always, thanks so much!!

If you can stand not to hunt KS whitetails for a year, the muley hunting can be very good. Nebraska would be a close, cheap state.

A General Deer tag in any of the zones in eastern Wyoming. Lots of deer on public land (not a high percentage monsters) and doable on a modest budget. Terrain varies from open prairie in the grasslands to pine forest in the Black Hills so you can pick which ever suits you. The seasons open on different dates depending on what zone your hunting so you should be able to work around any schedule. Also, you may be able to pick up a leftover doe antelope tag and bring home two animals for about the same price as one. That's a real value!!

Wyoming Region C. Start scouting this year

Sounds like a good plan! I'll be taking lots of notes!

I like this idea, I will hunt whitetail this fall in KS, then plan for Mulies next fall in Wyoming.

Thanks again!

Colorado or Wyoming would be my go to as far as minimizing the drive time... if you don't care about that then Idaho.

Since it's my first ever, I'd drive anywhere! :)

I also just realized, that I have never hunted public land... EVER! Pronghorn in 43 days will be my first.

Kansas mule deer way underrated. Search HuntTalk member Brisco for some pictures of WIHA western mule deer. Southwind has done the same. Residents probably can count on getting a "any deer" tag (allowing either whitetail or mule deer antlered deer) every other year.
