Just wondering what others are using for GPS while hunting remote areas? I will be doing a lot of solo hunting I expect and I’d like to have something to help the wife feel more comfortable.

Probably several ways to skin this cat, but as mentioned above, a sat communicator and iPhone with location turned on in iMessage is probably a fairly inexpensive route to go. Dunno if android offers a similar capability with their messaging apps, but I assume so.

Advantage of adding the satcom is the added peace of mind that comes with an ability to send out an SOS. For the GPS side, onX or a similar mapping app will allow you to navigate with a pretty user-friendly interface.

SPOT and Samsung.

I have not had satellite messaging yet.

Used my custom message for "animal down, all is well" 10 days ago, and my check in, camp location as well.

I've had SPOT for 15 plus years. Simple and it works. I know of people who have inreach as well, and they work.

T Mobile.

Got rid of Inreach and Zoleo this year. T Mobile connects seamlessly via Starlink for texting and location sharing.

There may be a couple requirements like iPhone 14 or newer. And it’s on a data plan that’s $10 or so more a month. But well worth it.

I rececently added the inreach mini 2 and I have been loving it. I get multiple uses out of it a week though. Before I was just a “You’ll hear back from me by XYZ time” so the feedback from family with peace of mind has been positive.

I always also my iPhone on me regardless. If I am hunting I keep a Garmin Etrex going as well in addition to a map and compass.

Zoleo and Samsung. Zoleo, less expensive device and monthly plan, has weather, tracking etc and good battery life. Used for a few years without issue for thru-hikes and hunting. Samsung has satellite messaging as well.

OnX works well for me on an iPhone. I download the area I'm planning to hunt so I don't need a signal for a base map and I take a backup power supply. I leave the phone in airplane mode when I can to preserve the battery.
