Our kids’ school just had an author visit from Kevin Lovegreen. All of his books are stories about hunting with his kids. I’ve read “the swamp” every night for 3 weeks.
Google Kevin Lovegreen Author and it’s the first hit.

My 6 yr old absolutely loves these books. He has everything from turkey, deer, elk, fishing etc. I get them on Amazon. Winner winner turkey dinner was a good one right before turkey opener.

This series is very cool. Great stories and legit hunting lessons as well. My 8 year old and I take turns reading pages.

My kids love the “Who Pooped in…” series of books. They like the North Woods the most because it’s got moose poop.
Hatchet is another that I read with my nephews when they were younger and they loved it.
I’m reading Summer of the Monkeys to my boys now, same author as Where the Res Fern Grows. It’s keeping them quiet during bed time.

I wanted to type that badly. I was thinking 8 might be a bit young. 4th grade is for sure old enough for hatchet.

Not specifically outdoors but adjacent-- I loved the Hank the Cowdog series when I was a kid and have already gotten one of my nephews reading them.

As a 90's kid, Hatchet and Where the Red Fern Grows comes to mind. He's probably a bit young for the Redwall book series and aren't necessarily "outdoor" books but they are excellent adventure books.

Almost 40 years old and I still can't finish Where the Red Fern Grows. Shiloh is a pretty good one about hounds, too.

I loved the Shiloh books as a kid. Anything with a dog got me hooked.
