You folks might recall a man was attacked while bear hunting this spring in the southern gravelly range (Montana). I never saw any more news posted, but I did find these for an update.

They would rather feed the bears humans than have the humans control the bear population by hunting them in NJ.

Did NJ ever get a bear hunt? I know it was a big deal when I lived in PA in the late 90's.

Yes we did get a bear season. Once we got rid of the anti-hunting governor. The season is in early December. It was F&G's foot in the door to get started. The kill is around 300 for the one week season. We hope the season starts a couple weeks earlier in the future. A couple bears have been over #800. My friends mom killed one that was 651# and I think it was 22 1/16

Sounds like the NJ bear quota needs to increase! A hiker in NJ was killed.

They did everything correctly. There was a close encounter on the east end of that wilderness, too. He did not end up having to use the spray, but was ready. Luckily, the bear backed down.
