Back in the game

Jumped forward about 10 feet and stood there shaking until the second shot exploded on the shoulder then straight to the ground.

I definitely get that's the philosophy some prescribe to just not me. Only two elk I've killed with a rifle were both with one shot with a 30-06 with 200gr Partitions and ran 30-40 yards before dieing. If I want more damage I'll use a accubond or SST that does as much damage as anything but also holds together incase I hit a shoulder.
This is a wild statement to me. The SST and the ELD-X are essentially the same thing except the SST has a lower BC. Shoot 100 animals with both and it would be a completely random guess as to which animal was shot with which.

Good luck @mtmuley with your family antelope hunt! I can’t wait for opening day to do the same. Been scouting a big one I hope sticks around. He seems to be real cagey and last I saw him, he hopped up out of bed at 530 yards with his 20 does and left the area… not sure I’ll hold out though.

I’ve shot Accubonds for a long time now and have had more animals run off and have to be searched for than when I was shooting core-lokts and ballistic tips. In fact I can’t remember the last DRT I’ve had with an Accubond. I’m going back to heavy for caliber ballistic tips (match bullets) this year for everything.
How many animals have you shot with a ELD-X or SST? I've shot 3 with a ELD-X (granted not a large survey pool) and either personally killed or been right there when 50+ animals have died by a SST (4 alone last year). If you'd line up every animal I'd easily pick out the three killed with the ELD-X. Only bullets I've ever seen that caused what appeared to be a exit wound at the entrance. Here's a antelope shot the year before the ELD-X incident with the same 30-06 and 165 gr SST at 160 yards. Note the giant EXIT WOUND! No excuse for a 178gr 30-06 moving that fast to not fully penetrate a doe antelopes ribcage.

Don't have as much experience with the accubond only been playing with them a couple years and no more then 6-7 animals. So far I'm not super impressed but not let down they perform similar to a SST honestly. Killed a whitetail doe and muley buck last year with a 180gr accubond. Buck dropped in his tracks doe ran about 50 yards. The first deer I killed with one was a 130gr 270 on a nice buck a little over a hundred yards away. He dropped in his tracks and I found the bullet stuck to the offside skin. What more could a guy want from a bullet? Oh and here's the bullet.

Anyway hope the match bullets work well for you this year!

Good luck MtMuley and family, sounds like a great hunt and time well spent with loved ones.

@mtmuley,

So if you shoot a Mack truck with your 300 RUM using a Hammer bullet, how far does it go??
😉

In all seriousness though, I'm surprised you aren't using a Hammer bullet for your daughter's 243.
Kinda the best of both worlds.
Pedals shed off making more wound tracks, while the base keeps penetrating.
What's not to love?!

We are using a Hammer in the .243. 80 grain Hammer Hunter. mtmuley

Enjoy your family hunt. Those hunts are the best ones.

My daughter always liked these becuase “they are pretty”. Not bad on game either.

I'm so jealous of your OTC Pronghorn hunts. I always wanted to do this with my boys, but never drew the tags.
My wife has 11 points in Wyoming now for pronghorn. We specifically got hers so we could split them with our oldest two when my daughter turns 12. 2028 is along way off.
