Hello all,

Are there any AZ bull elk tags that could be drawn with 0 points? Ive never applied for elk in AZ so I'm having a hard time deciding what to put in for.

I would like to have the opportunity to go hunt rather than waiting many years for one dream hunt. Ive been looking at the late rifle and limited opportunity hunts since the early hunts appear to be harder to draw.

Any input will be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, technically yes you have a chance with 0 points but it's very slim. Get up to 5 points though and then you start having a decent chance. Will have to cough up $170 or so I believe to have a chance at drawing. You are required to buy a NR hunting license in order to apply, plus $15 per app.

Depends on where you reside. As a resident you have a chance, as a NR you will only be in the 1-2 Pass draw this coming year, and will have a minimum of 5% of the tags available. Odds will be single digit or less. With the new 5/5 NR rule, by the time you make it to the max pools for mid tier late rifle hunts you will be close to 10 points.
Randy Newberg hunter has a YouTube channel that has a video on the az draw that is worth a look.

I believe you also have to pay for the tag upfront and then wait for a refund when you don't draw. This year it was $665.

This is true for paper apps-- everything is paid upfront. But if you apply online with a credit/debit card, you are immediately charged the nonrefundable license and app fee, and only charged the tag fee if you are drawn.

Ah ok, thanks. Guess I didn't read far enough on the AZ regs.

I had zero points and I have never applied for a tag. I was drawn for bow bull elk this year.

I did apply with my son who did have points. I am not sure how many I know he was drawn 2 years ago for elk in AZ.

There's just always "that guy" who drew with zero points! Haha. How did your hunt go Novice?

Our hunt start Friday.

We scout last Sunday and found a couple of tanks with fresh elk signs.

There were plenty of deer signs and with spotted 4 of them at mid-day. The was also a very large antelope heard.

However even if I don't get anything I get to spend 4 days with my son and grand son. Life just doesn't get any better.

Back from the hunt. We sat on different tanks early morning and late in the day. We had a heard of about 15 elk come within 45 feet of our blind. NOT ONE BULL AMONG THEM. We had a couple of other encounters, but we did nit sight one bull. But we had a great time.
