I sold my 7x57 to get a 280. I sold my 280 to get a 280 AI. It was in super light Kimber Hunter and a tack driver.

It bored me. I sold it. Now I am looking for a classic 7x57 again.

Anyone have positive words about the 7x57 to mitigate my madness. I mean,,, why not just get a 7mm-08???

I've been playing with a 6mm Remington, and appreciating the old Mauser lineage back to 7x57. Its a pretty cool, historical cartridge, no reason not to go with one.

I think you answered your own question “I mean,,, why not just get a 7mm-08???”

The only way I’d lean 7x57 would be if I found a special rifle in it. Like a Ruger #1 or maybe one of the Hawkeye Africans stamped 275 Rigby instead. You already got rid of the best option the 30-06 case ever inspired 😂

In modern rifles with a cautious approach it can be handloaded to run with a 280, at least with the 140s and 150s. 7x57 has greater case capacity than the 708.
I’m leaving the house in just an hour with a 7x57 loaded with 150s at 2950 for an elk hunt. Pretty sure it’ll work just fine. It’ll also go to Africa this spring for a Southern Greater Kudu.
Mine is a #1 stamped .275 Rigby. 100 and 400 yard targets.

the family heirloom is an old custom 7x57 i rebarreled, shoots 168 berger at 2800 .5moa, it has harvested lots of game, a boone and crockett ram is where it shined for us,,,

Get the 7mm-08 you wont regret it lol. Ive shot both 7x57 and 8mm mauser and the 7mm-08 in my opinion is a sweet spot between both. Never shot a 280 but its definitely a rifle i want

I have a Stevens 200 chambered in 7mm-08AI.
I've put thousands of rounds through it at the range, and has taken many deer while hunting.

When my daughter asked me about building a custom rifle for her (she's fairly recoil sensitive) I got to looking around for actions.

Then I accidentally won a Mauser at a gun auction locally for $65.
I was just trying to help get the bidding started, but nobody wanted it.

Well, it ended up being a 7X57 Mauser. 24" barrel with a purple Boyd's AT-One stock.
Yes, I know! There's a special place in pergitory for me...

She's shooting the 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip over a charge of RL17.
She's taken several deer with it so far.
Plus it's legal caliber should she get drawn for an elk.

The 7X57 does have a place.
And that with me owning
7mm-08AI
280 Rem
284 Win
7mm Rem Mag
7mm WBY Mag
