Santa has a new addition to his naughty list. Another mule deer buck was illegally killed on winter range south of Pinedale recently. The carcass of the mature buck was discovered by Wyoming Game and Fish officers on Sunday on the north end of the Mesa , southwest of Pinedale. The antlers had been sawed off. This is at least the third deer poached in the area over the past month. On December 10, a mature mule deer buck was discovered in Wildcat Canyon north of LaBarge. It too was found with the antlers sawed off its skull. The third deer was a 4x4 buck with a 24 inch spread that was discovered on November 22nd. It had had been illegally shot and left lying in Brodie Draw west of Daniel. Even without poachers, this time of year is difficult for Wyoming ’s wildlife. Deep snows in the high country force the animals to low elevation areas making them more vulnerable vehicle collisions and harassment by winter recreationists. In recent years, Game and Fish enforcement personnel have focused more attention on mule deer winter ranges, but they still need help. Anyone observing suspicious behavior or obvious poaching activities should report to local law enforcement or to the STOP POACHING hotline at 1-800-442-4331. Information leading to the arrest and conviction of poachers could net you a reward of up to $1,000.
