This was a different hunt in the fact that my wife got to join me for her first deer hunt. Since no one else in my hunting crew drew a tag, it was just us so it was a date as well. My mom came down Friday to watch our kids but that meant we would have to be back Sunday afternoon. We left Friday around 1:30 and made camp without an issue… lots of hunters but we managed to find a great spot. Grabbed a few cold ones and went on a little cruise to see what was around.A8F60575-563C-4084-A149-D5BC34C0D95C.jpegMy wife has never seen a moose in the wild so this was a nice treat for her.

Of course the day before season this guy is hanging out 100 yards off the road.

It was chilly to start the morning!

We cruised the morning and didn’t see anything… she has a doe tag and I have a buck … which does are typically fairly easy to find and make a stalk, but we couldn’t find anything.

A little siesta!
We decided to make a trek across the unit to a place I have scouted but never hunted. Just pulled up to a spot to glass and found a group of does. They were only half mile off the road so I told my wife she didn’t need her pack which turned out to be a stupid idea on my pack. I was hell bent on getting her close to these deer. We crossed an old lake bed that has since dried up and hauled up the other side as fast as I could push my wife.

She caught her breath and then we cleared the ridge to peer over to be within 80 yard of the deer. We were trying to communicate which one was clear of the others to shoot as it turned out there were 2 forky bucks along so it took a minute for them to clear. I wanted her to get one so bad! Boom … I didn’t know which one she shot at she wasn’t sure either.. no blood or limping but they were looking back and staying close. We dropped back off the edge to get a better angle and found she dropped her doe where she stood. Perfect shot!

I was so happy! I realized the deer hung up another 100 yards out at 225 or so and this little guy stuck around too long. It was 5:30 so would have no time to hunt more that night and only 1/2 day Sunday to hunt I chose to tag out.

Remember when I had my wife leave her pack … well only an hour til dark and her headlamp back at the pickup, I made quick work gutless method on both. I put both in my pack and my wife took the guns and head of my buck. Heavy pack but we made it to the pickup at 7:30 with only my headlamp. So proud of my wife dropping her doe. What a perfect date!

Good man( n wife)a couple tap. But I would have had her carry one
I thought about it, but at only 7:30 it was still plenty of time for dating! She did make a sling for my gun out of a jacket that I was pretty impressed with though! I typically carry it on the Kifaru Gun Bearer but she insisted.
