ABLR at short range

For those who have used this bullet at short distances >200 yards, how has it done? Wanting to test it out this year but wasn't sure how it would perform up close. Already got a solid load worked up with it. 6.5 PRC, and 150 ABLR going 2830. I won't be using it for elk or anything too large just mature whitetail and hopefully a muley this fall.

210 at 3150 at about 80 yards. Bullet came apart. Had to finish the bull with my pistol. Deer and antelope at 360 plus, no issues. The regular Accubond is a better bullet. mtmuley

Id rather shoot the regular accubond but wanted the heavier bullet.

absolutely NO. On faster rounds I would never used. I started using these with my Nosler 30. Brutal results. I shot two cow elk. One at 350ish yards. Hit her in the lungs and clipped rib. Exit was a softball size hole. No exaggeration. The other one I shot around a 150 yards. Founds bits and pieces of lead all inside her and as a bonus had a few in the steaks later on.

Maybe in a less powerful round they hold up better.

Shoot the regular Accubonds and dont think twice. What I shoot in my 28 Nosler. Any I have recovered created a great slug.

Wife shot an elk at 190 yards. 129 grain, 6.5 cal going 2900 at muzzle. Hit the elk twice. Went completely through. Exit was the size of a grape on both shots. One hit ribs on entry and the other hit ribs on exit. Then she shot an antilope at 425… gernade. I’m not sure what the deal is with that. Now we use terminal ascent bullets.

28 Nosler at 308 yds pencil size holes on a desert sheep. Frigging sucked. Switched to Hammers and totally happy

150gr ABLR in my 7mm Rem Mag.
Distance to buck maybe 50 yards. Maybe closer to 35 yards.
Bullet just penciled through.
But pencil hole through both lungs and heart still ends up dead.

The Ballistic Tip does more damage internally and still holds together. I've never recovered one yet.
Oh, and I advise not to hit heavy bone with these either.
165gr from a 30-06, hit opposite shoulder. You could put your fist in the hole.

You will be just fine. Shot an elk femur with milk jugs behind it a few years ago just to test the 142 lrab out of an 6.5-06 and it made it to like the 4th jug still which is a lot. This was at 50 yards.

So looked back through old posts. It was actually 3 gallon water jugs and it made it through 3 of them. And it was at 40 yards started at 2950fps

The 142 LRAB was started at 2950 fps. Shot from 40 yards again. The lrab blew through the bone and first jug, dumped a little shrapnel in the second jug, made it into the third jug and had enough momentum to put a hole in the far side of the 3rd jug but not enough to pass through. The lrab slug was 63.2 grains after all that. 3' of bone and water which is a hell of a performance at 40 yards if you ask me.

Trust me, Accubonds don't. Everyone has a story. Between myself, family and friends we have killed dozens and dozens of animals with Accubonds in various cartridges. I put a 200 grain through a bull at 42 yards 3200 fps muzzle velocity. Simply a better bullet than the LR version. mtmuley

I quit shooting anything nosler when they got so hard to find during Covid. Found other bullets that have worked just as good and cost less

I never ran out during Covid. But, I do shoot some bullets now that are really affordable. If you know what I mean. mtmuley

I shot the 142 out of a Creedmoor into a mule deer. It left a sideway mini football sized hole of the off side. I killed my first bull with that same combo and it was quite the rodeo. I was very lucky with a Hail Mary to get him slowed down enough for third finishing shot. I just use regular accubonds or Barnes now.

One thing I will say for the ABLR.
After running them over the chrono, then plugging the data into my ballistics calculator they shot about 8" high at 800 yards.

So either BC is higher than advertised, or my chrono is way off. But I'm betting the BC is off as my 7mm-08AI with Berger VLD is spot on.

That and the ABLR grouped REALLY WELL at 600 yards!!!

Had a similar experience with a sharply quartering away bull at 50 yards. Hit him a ways back and found the bullet in the front chest cavity. Shooting the 210 out of a 30 Sherman Magnum at 3,000 per second at the muzzle. The 210 turned into 95 grains.

I think the lrab was designed to retain 40% of its weight vs the regular accubond 60%. Looks like the lrab performed as advertised
