Hey guys! My dad and I drew our first ever elk permit, the last 5 years we've hunted all OTC or Montana general, any who we were fortunate enough to draw the 622-20 tag in Montana. A big jump from OTC tags....

Being this may be the only time we will ever draw a unit of this caliber together again we're going all out... I cancelled my beach vacation and we're going to summer scout Thursday-Saturday, I'm flying in on Wednesday and leaving Sunday and he's driving it(retired).

My only question, is with the weather(specifically rain creating gumbo), which month would be more preferable to get out there, the end of July or the end of August or in September? We're not concerned with finding elk, just driving the roads and hiking in and getting an in person feel for the unit. I'm skeptic about September because of the pressure of other hunters and I don't want to be out there walking ridges when they're hunting potentially buggering up their hunts.

Thanks guys!
T.J.

There's potential for rain any month of the year...my best recommendation would be to watch the forcast and do not risk it if there has been any rain in the past couple days, or if there is any in that days forecast. That being said, I was shed hunting in the unit last weekend, and you could get pretty much anywhere. So anytime from now until September would be best, but watch that weather!!

unfortunately I have to book a flight within the next week so the forecast won't be of help. So essentially it's a crap shoot eh?... crap lol

If it were me I'd plan late August bulls should be grown out well to have some glassing fun and before the hunters hit the hills hard. Make darn sure your outta there if rain is forecast or you will probably be camping a bit in your rig.

Amen. Thankfully, in the past few years there have been a few cell towers added to the area, so on most high points you should get service if worst comes to worst. Also bring plenty of water and watch for snakes. It gets pretty hot up there in the summer.
