My parents only had a platform that folded out and covered the void in front of the seat which effectively made a backseat playpen.

Cardboard box worked for me and my sisters in the early 60's.

In the sixties my parents discovered the miracle of motion sickness pills. With four boys stuffed in a station wagon all day on road trips, that "medicine" was a lifesaver. Conked us out in short order.
