7mm-08 accubond seating depth

Ok here is the update. I tried several different loads today but the one that shined the most was 43 gr of Varget with the 140 accubond at 2.770. Averaged 2900 fps and shot a 3 shot .510 group. Thank you all for the help.
Whew! How long is your barrel? That's fast!

22” no pressure signs. It was cloudy yesterday so I think my chrono was right.
I'm sure your chronograph is spot on.

I'm getting 2850 from my 7-08 with that load, also no pressure signs, 24" barrel. I have some brass I've trimmed once and fired probably 6-7 times and primer pockets are still tight.

My wife's 7-08 exact same load, 23" barrel...2930.

Oh, and both rifles same barrel maker, contour, twist, etc. etc.

Why the difference in velocity? Got me...

I'd try the Berger seating depth test procedure. Basically you load up a series of cartridges at 4 significantly different lengths, 0.010, 0.050, 0.090, 0.130 from the lands. Then shoot a group at each length. I've only worked up a few loads using this but my experience has been one length is noticeably better than the others (just like Berger predicts). Fine tune from there if so desired. For Accubonds (in an '06 not a 7-08), the winner was 0.090.

My set up - with Sako 7mm-08 with 140gn Accubonds with a COL of 2.807". Comparator length measuring at ogive is 2.247". The jump from the loaded length 2.247" to the lands on my gun is .133".
Thanks for this, once the police have granted me permission to buy a Sako 85 in 7mm-08 I will be looking into load development, or rather my friend @Big Ears will be on my behalf!
So I could be shooting anything from a lightly framed roe deer (around 50lb weight) up to heavily built red stags (300lb+) up to 300 yards on the reds.
Lead is my favoured bullet, but I can see the UK going down the copper route in the not too distant future.
Cheers
Richard

I just worked through this for my son’s 7mm-08. Two rounds came out on top. The first was 2.80. The semiconductor was just off the lands at 2.857. They were both very close in accuracy so we choose 2.80. His gun will shoot just under MOA with that round. Good luck.

COAL is kind of moot as each rifle has a different throat, even two identical makes. I run Accubonds at 10-15 thou off the lands in 7mm-08s and .280s with good results.

A little more information for you on a Sako 85 in 7mm-08. The magazine length is 2.965" thanks to the metal magazine. If you look at my numbers on the Accubonds, in the thread, the 2.807" plus the .133" jump at that length will result in a 2.940" length to the lands. The magazine is longer by .025". I'm thinking you are going to have some room to play at the lands or with jump based on the numbers off of my gun. Yours will vary I'm sure but Im guessing Sako tolerances in production is tighter than some other guns we hear about so this info might be similar for you. What I like about the Sako is the magazine length is quite a bit longer than other short action rifles I have loaded for.

What seating depth are you guys getting your best groups with?
I shoot 150 gr ABs - most ABs like to be off lands 0.010-0.012". OAL is determined by individual rifles, mostly limited by magazine - If you are only target shooting, length is what your rifle affords. My old Rem 700 Mtn rifle allows OAL of 2.8335" for mine. ( case trim is 2.025-2.035"). 2710 FPS and 0.435" group - 7mm-08's love, love, love VARGET - 41.2 grains 1.127mS node in 22" barrel.

With Accubonds and Trophy Boned Tipped 140gr I use 2.800 OAL.

But when I use 120gr Barnes TTSX I use 2.750 OAL.

With the 140gr bullets I get 2900 FPS with RL17, PP2000mr, W760, and Hunter.

With the 120gr Barnes TTSX I get 3100 FPS with RL17 and PP2000mr and W760.

140 AB
47.5 grains Big Game
Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primer
2.805”
2870 fps
Stainless T3 Lite

My dad’s last bull, in 2015. A single 140 AB at 225 yards, 90 feet stagger and fell over.

Max load so work up.

Coupe different ways I like to seat bullet's. Both of course depend on the loaded round fitting in the magazine. I measure from bolt face to bullet tip with a cleaning rod. Then seat a bullet to that length. Next I try chambering and if I feel the bullet touch the lands at all, I seat a bit deeper till I no longer feel the lands. I never ever have the bullet deep enough on the first try. The other way is to seat the base of the bullet flush with the base of the case neck. Now neither of these ways worked for me years ago in a 7mm mag I had. Wanted t use 160gr bullet's in it and couldn't get what I wanted the way it was. So I loaded up a dummy round with the 160gr bullet seated to the base of the neck and dropped it off at a gun smith. He used that dummy case to ream out the lands till it fit right. Turned into a great shooting rifle!

But I also think for the average hunter, having the bullet jump a bit isn't gonna change the out come of the shot on game. Factory ammo has proven that time and again!
