I started hunting late in our season about ten years ago. Fewer hunters. But with the breeding cycle cranking down and fewer gobblers kicking about, the hunting becomes more challenging. It's much more hit or miss finding willing birds to come to the call. Always exceptions, but many times gobblers are willing to interact but are cautious to commit. I've had alot of birds hang up at 40-50 yards.
I've always considered 40 yards a long shot with my 12 gauge conventional set up. I can knock birds down but the pattern typically cripples birds. The Stevens 301 20 gauge I have now equipped with an Indian Creek choke , red dot, and TSS fills the bill nicely for those longer shots. I patterned this gun, and it's amazing up to 65 yards. In fact I laid a gobbler out at that distance last year.
Typically I try every trick in the book to get them in close...that's the point. But honestly if I drive 5-6 hours for my one hunt I want to come home with a mature bird, or two. They aren't safe now shuffling around " out there".
The flip side with that Stevens is there is no margin for error at 15-20 yards. The pattern is fist size with few flyers.
I've been really happy with the 7 shot TSS, but picked up some 9 shot to try, maybe this year.
