308 Powders

I've never really been satisfied with the loads from my Rem 600, 308. I've used BLC2 and 4064, pushing 180's & 165's. Accuracy has been good, but volicity has always been on the slow side. (Anybody got a walker?)

Thought of using Win 748 or RL 15. Any Ideas?

This case uses a faster type of powder. Maybe you could try H4895, Hodgdons Varget, H414 (this one needs a Magnum primer) or H380. IMR4895 or IMR4064 show good promise. You shouldn't expect faster than 2600 fps with a 165g bullet or 2500 fps with a 180g bullet.

The 308 really shines with 150g bullets for deer and could be used for Elk too, depending on bullet Quality and construction. I personally would use 150grs over any thing else.

Used 150's on 6-8 deer and they just didn't show the 'promise' I was looking for. They all died very well, but hunting in swamps, ya need to floor 'em! Tracking can we say be a bit of a &itch!

On a short notice hunt, and out of ammo, I picked up some Win 180 PP's at the local "I got anything ya need, as long as ya need what I got" stores.

Actually got d**m near the same volicity as the 150's and the deer started to drop in their tracks, for a change. So, when I started to reload, I stayed with the 180's, but in Nosler BT's.

Can't say anything bad about the results thus far, 'cept for the volicity issue.

I'm hitting around 2400 with the handloads, but I get 2525 out of the factory stuff, and would like to get closer to that.

I can touch holes at 100 yards with my favorite 308 load,which is 46.1 grains of IMR4350 and a 180 grain Nosler partition.The deer never go anywhere either, they just fold up or run 20 yards and then fold up.

i have had very good luck with H414. i try to get a reasonable load with the same powder for as many guns as i can. in my 7-08 h414 4 bullets make 1 hole., in my 270 groups are under an inch, for 243 i did better with factory stuff so i will be looking for something else for that but when i start loading 308 h414 will be my first choice. as stated earlier you do need to use magnum primers wth h414 and i prefer 180 over 150 in all 30 cal that i have used.

Fastest accurate loads I've ever seen with a 308 were loaded with IMR 4895 and Win. 748. They seemed to run within about 15 fps of each other and grouped about 3/4 inch off the bench. Both were using 150 grain Ballistic Tips.
