9 years later I just picked up a FCFS mule deer tag for NV unit 141-145, opening day is this coming Sunday, and I never been to the area before.
Any one has any info they are willing to share, whether publicly or privately I’d appreciate it and return the favor as best I can
As someone who will be hunting antelope near there in a couple weeks this thread had me concerned.
But....here is what I found on Wikipedia about the Bighorn mountains:
"The Wilson Price Hunt expedition of Astorians noted in 1811 that the bison dung was so dense in this area that it resembled...
Nevada is friendlier to the public than some other states, here is the most relevant statute:
"NRS 503.240 Unlawful to hunt, trap or fish upon certain private property without permission.
1. It is unlawful for any person to hunt, fish in nonnavigable waters or trap upon land which is...
The younger deer tend to be less tough and taste better, as well as easier to find.
Work is slow for me today and I just spent some time looking at Unit 151 on On-X, now I wish I had a tag there, it looks pretty promising. Checker-boarded public BLM/private land with lots of springs and looks...
One thing I learned about our NV desert mule deer is they actually prefer the scrubby brushy mid elevations as opposed to the higher mountain or lower desert valleys, hope that helps.
That is cool. I've never hunted those units. Getting your first big game animal solo will be quite a challenge.
If you are not determined to get a trophy, you could probably find a deer slowly driving dirt roads in the early morning and late in the day, be ready to jump out out of your...
Welcome fellow Las Vegan!
Do you ever shoot at Desert Sportsman?
What do you hunt?
I do a lot of small game hunting, like doves and ducks at the Overton Wildlife Mgt area, and then wherever and whatever big game tags I draw.
I am pleased to report that after getting skunked on my first antelope hunt a couple years ago, I was successful opening morning yesterday.
I am changing my username on this site back to AntelopeEater, haha.
I finally got an antelope, and this was also my first successful DIY big game animal...
I have a .375 Ruger and I like it and used it to harvest a blacktail deer recently, it was overkill but with a copper bullet there wasn't that much more meat damage than a smaller caliber would have caused.
Interestingly though, Alaska Fish and Game actually officially recommends a 30-06 with...
Congratulations! That is a nice looking harvest!
I will be trying to get mine one week from tomorrow, north central Nevada. I've driven through the hunting area numerous times before, and always seen antelope along the highway there so I am pretty optimistic.
Thanks, northern A zone near Laytonville, CA.
I don't think I've ever had anything happen to me from poison oak, maybe growing up in southern Nevada and hiking a lot in the desert with shorts got my leg skin so used to being scratched up by various plants my body just doesn't care anymore, lol.
Not my first time, but the definitely the most epic!
Most of my prior hunts have been solo on public land and involved taking my weapon for a long hike and not seeing any game animals at all.
The first deer I ever harvested was a forky with a muzzleloader in unit 071, back in 2023. I also got that tag on FCFS.
As far as I know it is a great tag and I would use it if I were you.
I just stayed in a motel in Wells, NV, and did day hunts out of that area, but I wasn't determined to go...
Recently had the pleasure of going on a guided hunt for free range wild animals on a gigantic private ranch of over 7,000 acres in northern California, it was truly epic!
Achieved a long held goal of finally getting a black bear, also got my best deer yet, a 4x3 blacktail buck, and a bonus pig...
I'm very excited for it this year!
I got a new German Shepherd puppy several months ago, and though I realize she is not a "real" bird dog, and I don't even know how to train a serious bird dog, I noticed she loves chasing after pigeons in the yard....so I'm thinking she'll have fun running...
Nice.
I am really excited about my upcoming hunting/fishing planned trips.
Life may get in the way and I may not be able to go on all of the below outings, but this is what I am hoping to do.
In mid-August I am going on a 3 day/night fishing charter cruise out of San Diego with a friend and...
If you look at my post history, you will see I joined back when I first got an antelope tag as an adult onset hunter.
I was excited about getting an antelope, had heard they are arguably the best tasting American game animal, and gave myself the username AntelopeEater because I was excited at...
I recently got the Tikka Game in 300 Win Mag, smoked bronze. Buds Gun Shop online had a "make an offer" deal on it, so I offered $1,700 and they accepted.
It is the most expensive rifle I have ever bought, my first tactical chassis rifle, and my first 300 Win Mag.
I put on a 6x24 Vortex OpMod...
