    338 WBY RPM- newest cartridge

It’s honestly is one of the few cartridges that has interested me in the last 10-15 years. Ammo cost will likely keep most away… and if Hornady decides to make a “sensible” 338 PRC next it’ll all but commercially relegated this to nothing but a niche offering. What’s not to like about a standard...

    Afghanistan

Well said and I largely agree with you. I remember having to go into other theaters in my time since leaving Afghanistan and whenever a high ranking official came by for a visit or asked what was needed my response was almost always met with a “hmmm…” My response was almost always without...

I have friends that don’t watch military action movies. It’s different when you’ve lived aspects of the experience. Everyone is different though. For me, I could see and look at the dead bodies on a regular basis but you never forget the smells of dead human flesh IMO. Movies and the imagery of...

    Afghanistan

No offense, but I spent the last 21+ years dealing in counter terrorism and counter insurgency on 5 different continents at this point. I have family members in law enforcement on the federal, state, and city level. I’m defining terrorism in the classical sense and yes the January 6th Capitol...

No worries. Also sorry to hear about your brother. I know it can be tough on the family… and thankfully there’s some societal shifts in how we view and deal with mental illnesses. I think war changes everyone involved on some level. It has to just by the nature of it. Obviously some handle and...

    Afghanistan

In fairness, Jess made that comment after someone made a reference to terrorism. Unfortunately, our culture gives a higher priority of fear to foreign terrorism when domestic terrorism is far more likely for us to experience… and statistically a far larger and more present problem for the homeland.

    Afghanistan

There is probably some truth and level of accuracy in that comment. To be clear, my criticism is directed towards the political class and not the military… or even the State Department. There has to be leadership that facilitates an environment where everyone can beat execute their jobs. I also...

    Afghanistan

Historically many of the cities throughout the Middle East, Arabian Peninsula, and SW Asia were liberal bastions not unlike any other world city. Kabul is still something of a thriving metropolis. Prior to the Russians coming into Afghanistan in the late 70’s, Kabul was very pro west ironically...

    Afghanistan

The last time I was in Afghanistan was February 8, 2012… I don’t go too deeply into the stories of my time there but my feelings on Afghanistan come down to this. We can have the best (or amongst the best) trigger pullers, logistics, weapons, equipment, etc. but if we go into ANY theater...

    6.8 Western

Don’t know or care... but legal is legal. It’s a thing that people that live in those areas have to be concerned with and no doubt some of them travel to Western states as well. For someone starting out fresh this is clearly another capable option and that was the point. The whole rationale (for...

    6.8 Western

I’m more excited about the 280AI offerings personally but this cartridge looks great too. Pretty much every state with elk east of the Mississippi from what I understand.

    6.8 Western

I think you’re spot on. For those looking for a modern cartridge but live in a state where anything under 27 caliber is elk illegal, this fits the bull for another do it all cartridge.

    6.8 Western

Seems like an improvement on the WSM line... or maybe it’s a modernized improvement of the 284 Win in some ways. I don’t see what there isn’t to like about it. If I were starting off fresh and wanted a modernized ”do it all”cartridge it would be on the list to consider. Hopefully it’ll be a success

    Camera poll

I use a combination of cameras from Sony and Panasonic primarily. For wildlife I’d probably increase the budget a bit because a half decent telecom is going to kill your budget before you buy the camera in reality.

Well you have one 26 caliber option, two 28 caliber options, and a 30 caliber option. Do you own other rifles in this caliber (for instance a Creedmoor, 7mm08, 308, etc.)? If so, then I’d choose the Magnum/Light Magnum in that caliber that you already own because it makes buying reloading...

    savage 110 ultralite

My bad... what was I thinking trying to be rational. Well I voted with my wallet for 280AI earlier in the month with a different rifle but if Savage put the same barrel (24”/1:8.4” twist) in the 280AI that they put in the 28 Nosler I would’ve considered this rifle more seriously. In my state...

Wouldn’t all of those work in reality? I think it comes down to personal preference.

.300 WSM vs. .280 Ackley Improved

I’d vote for the 280AI but it’s 100% subjective. Either will work for you I believe though you’ll have a bit more energy on target inside 400 yds or so with the 30 caliber option and the 280AI would likely over take it at greater distances which may not matter to you effectively. Either will...

    Your Digiscoping Setups

I’m kinda interested in responses myself. IT seems like Swarovski, Leica, and Kowa have the best optics suited to digiscoping from many bird forums I visited. I’m kind of a “lens snob” but really it comes down to I don’t want photos that look worse than what I get with my premium camera lenses.
