Start building points in Utah or Wyoming???

I can't think of a LE unit in Utah that doesn't give you a very good chance at a 320+ bull. Like others have said, it will take a while to get a LE tag though. I also can't think of many flat lands that the elk hang out in on these units though. Needing to hunt in October or later you could put...

    Last Minute Plan Changes

Spending quality time in some beautiful country with my dad is far more important to me than filling any tag. You never know how many more opportunities you'll get to do that.

Lose a Bull, Unit 65 CO?

While it might seem like a nice thing to do, I'm not sure what the rules are in Colorado but in Utah if you came across that bull it should be reported and not touched. The DWR might want to investigate it and only after they give you explicit permission can you take the head/antlers. I imagine...

    Elk Hunting conundrum

Utah archery started August 18 this year and usually starts sometime around then every year. Tags don't sell out for archery so you can always get one every year. OTC any bull in Utah hunting might not be the best around but it gives you a few weeks to at least have the chance at chasing some...

Looking for Elk hunting partner - thinking DIY Utah general anybull rifle Oct 6-18th

The extended archery is for the wasatch front (the mostly western facing slopes of the mountains directly east of the SLC area) and the Uinta basin which is the south slope of the Uintas down low, there is a lot of tribal land there so it can get tricky.

Looking for Elk hunting partner - thinking DIY Utah general anybull rifle Oct 6-18th

It varies wildly, most the places elk are at it is mountainous but they also go down into the flatter areas on certain units or certain times of the year. SE Utah like the La Sals are smaller mountain ranges but still can get really steep and thick. Where the better any bull areas are would be...

First Time Utah Solo Elk Hunt!

You bet, I live in Utah so I think I take for granted all the opportunities I have out my back door, I'm happy to help. Last year my brother and I went up to our areas every weekend during the season and the last 5 days of the season. There was a ton more bugling during those last 5 days and we...

First Time Utah Solo Elk Hunt!

Go to this website https://dwrapps.utah.gov/huntboundary/hbstart under find a hunt, select elk as the species, bull for sex, general season - anybull for hunt type and it will highlight the areas you can hunt in blue. A lot of those areas hold little to no elk though or they have private land...

First Time Utah Solo Elk Hunt!

Yes you can buy an OTC archery tag, in fact there are no limits for archery tags so they will never sell out. But an OTC tag only allows you to hunt in OTC areas, you can't go hunt anywhere in the state. Monroe is a limited entry area that doesn't allow OTC any bull hunting. You can get a spike...

    Elk Calendar

Like was said above about photo period, the cows start going into heat based on the amount of light that enters their pupils. This is right around the fall equinox when they day is as long as the night. Many people think that it is based on weather and stuff like that but it simply isn't true...

First Time Utah Solo Elk Hunt!

Monroe is a limited entry hunt that requires a lot of points to get. All the best places to hunt in Utah require a limited entry permit. Not to say people aren't successful on the general hunts every year but it is a lot harder with less opportunity. If you are coming all the way from back east...

    pants with knee pads

I have the Sitka mountain pants and I like the kneepads in them, plus you can remove them. I've never seen the KUIU pants to compare with. I don't know how much padding you need but I'd say the Sitka pad is about right for padding/comfort without being too bulky. Where you'll be hunting in...

Do cow elk bugle in June?

I had this exact same thing happen to me here in Utah last weekend. Got to our glassing spot at first light and saw a few cows and all of a sudden heard a weird bugle, I was still processing what I just heard when my wife looked at me and asked. “Was that a bugle??” A bunch of mews followed so I...

Utah elk hunt north and south slope info

I've hunted near red cloud loop my entire life and it gets packed. I could think of a few places you could backpack into around there but I'd say there's probably better opportunity for backpacking by moon lake. Also, the herd on the Yellowstone sub unit where Moon lake is, is much larger than...

    Elk Bugle

Try to learn a diaphragm if you can and pick up a tube from rocky mountain or phelps. I use the bully bull extreme from rocky mountain and it sounds pretty darn good. Diaphragms and tubes can sound so much better than the "easier" to use bugles.

    Smoke Pole Tactics

Sorry if I’m overlooking some details but what are the dates of the muzzleloader hunt compared to the rifle seasons you’re used to hunting? That will make a big difference if the time of year is a lot different.

Clothes for Late September Elk Hunt in Central Idaho

It can vary so widely year by year it will really be hard to predict until it gets within the forecast window. If I remember right, last year fires were raging and it was hot up until early/mid September, then it snowed a bunch mid/late September. I would definitely plan on taking something that...

    Antler Growth

I've been scouting my unit for the muzzleloader tag I drew in Utah and have come across a few bulls like the one in the pictures. I am a noob when it comes to antler growth and have never been able to do early season scouting like this. These pics were taken 6/2. Does the bigger bull in the pics...

Mystery ranch Metcalf: worth the cash?

I was about to pull the trigger on a metcalf with the new sub alpine camo they came out with but decided to hold off, and after looking at both packs in person I'm going to be getting an EXO 3500 like others on here have done. They are all great packs, look at how many elk Randy has carried out...

    Trail cam pic

Based on the date on the camera I'd like to see the monster that must be keeping that guy away from the cows.
