I went out yesterday looking to run an arrow through a turkey or two. I had reports that they were using a bean field pretty hard so I set up on the edge or it within 20 yards of an obvious spot where they had scratched at the snow. There were tracks all over and I was hopeful that they would...
I got into hunting late in life, so I was in my mid thirties when I was walking into some public ground in the dark about an hours and a half before legal shooting light. I was 1/4 mile from the truck when I hear a whole pack of coyotes sound of directly ahead of me.
They were probably 1/2 mile...
First off, love hunting in the snow.
Second, I love getting a chance to run an arrow through a whitetail buck. I was very fortunate that the slight amount of arrowing I did to this buck was enough to clip a vein or artery and he died. Still not sure how I got so fortunate.
I waited a few minutes until all of those bucks cleared out and then I got down and packed up my platform and sticks. I went to find the arrow and was not terribly impressed.
I walked in his tracks and I could see he was definitely bleeding, but I couldn't figure out if it was going to be...
I'm pretty tired, but I have a busy day tomorrow (have to butcher a deer) so I'll post the recap before I go to bed and not leave anyone hanging.
I got out to the grain bins where I could park and walk in to some river bottom ag fields backed by a complex of sloughs and riparian woods. It was...
Not quite 12 hours later...
It doesn't look like much, a little blood on the arrow and some hair on the snow, but I'll tell you what, if you can't be good you better be lucky.
Pretty much all loaded up, just need to change clothes and then I am going to head out to hunt in the snow. Not sure what to expect, but I'll try to make the most of an afternoon outside.
First, I love Norske Nook. I usually hit the one in Osseo on my way out to South Dakota.
Second, I have been meaning to go to Vortex just to see it. I dated someone in high school who had family in Barneveld and I would sometimes go to their family get togethers at a bowling alley on a country...
Well I didn't see anything this morning. I ended up getting down from my tree around 10 am and then moving to a part of the farm that is right along the river. I wanted to explore a little and was hoping that I would figure out where the turkeys had moved to.
I walked quite a ways and a lot of...
I'm going to try something new; a morning hunt the day after firearm season ends. I probably have to pull out by 1 so I can get back home in time for a Friendsgiving thing my daughter is hosting.
But I am hoping I will see something. There's a good chance the turkeys will be around and maybe a...
I'm trying to talk myself out of trying to get out tomorrow afternoon. It would be last chance to get out before Illinois' first firearm season will sideline me for the weekend.
I could possibly get out on Monday after three days of deer being chased by the orange army, but then my daughter...
BY the time I got out to the woods and up a tree it was about 2 and I was going to have about 3 hours to hunt.
I had seen a coyote out in the middle of a picked bean field as I walked in. The Coyote was about 300 yards north west of me and he was hunched up taking a dump out in the middle of...
Well it happened. I was laid off. It was coming down the tracks like a slow freight train and I was hoping I would have a new job lined up before it happened, but so far non of the irons I have in the fire have led to that next job.
With all that said, I'm going hunting. I'll be up in a tree...
Yeah I need to start expecting that deer will come from the wrong spot. It just happens too often.
Interviews are going good. I have been looking for a while but so far no one has taken the bait. But this past week I have had a lot of interest, which is good since I will be losing my job on...
Oh I forgot to add that on the drag out, we were struggling to keep our hands from sliding up the leg and then dropping her. I had a couple rubberized twist ties that I use to attach things to my backpack. So I just wrapped them around the foreleg and that kept our hands from sliding. That's...
I've been slowly cutting up doe meat today. Still have the backstraps, the two shoulders and a hind leg to cut up as well as some meat to cut up for grind.
I love being able to do this myself and to have the time to take my time doing it. I remember the first time I cut up a deer. It seemed...
As you can imagine, that didn't work out the way we hoped, she got nervous about something and decided to go ask the turkeys about it I guess. But my buddy was in the blind and I could go find a tree in the woods.
I went maybe 300 yards down the edge and found a game trail that cut into the...
After my interview, I slid back into the woods. I was initially thinking I would move all the way south in the woods to be closer to the creek, but about 100 yards south of where I had been that morning I found a big crape surrounded by rubs and decided that was the place to be. Sadly, I didn't...
