Study: Hunters Die After Consuming CWD-Infected Venison

I won't eat venison that comes from an animal that hasn't been tested. I just wish it was easier to get the tests done in a timely manner. Here in Illinois they do testing, but the whole testing regime is designed to be a source of data for the biologists and the hunter's interest in the safety...

    Ben's semi-live 2024 hunt thread

Side note, I boiled the shoulder blades and front and back upper leg bones from the buck I shot last fall. I ended up with 25 cups of stock. Used 4 cups in a venison stew and froze the rest. First time for the stew and first time for making stock. Pretty happy with both.

    Ben's semi-live 2024 hunt thread

So I had read online a bunch of people saying that it takes 30 days to get your exemption from Hunters Safety from the State of Hawaii, which you need in order to buy a license. I have about 2 months before we go the Big Island, so I wasn't really worried about the timing, but I just go my...

    Ben's semi-live 2024 hunt thread

Honestly, killing turkeys anywhere is a struggle for me, but I have taken one from public land before. So I at least know it can be done.

    Ben's semi-live 2024 hunt thread

It's just 6 days and counting until I get to go out after turkeys. I have an Illinois north zone second season tag for a state park that I hunted last year. I had run ins with turkeys last year and am looking forward to bringing one home this year. I am also bringing my buddy along. He hasn't...

    Not on Your Bucket List

I have no interest in hunting Africa. No interest in high altitude sheep and goat hunting. Not sure they are officially off my bucket list but I don't lay awake at night trying to figure out how to make that hunt happen. I have limited enough time and other resources that I try to focus on...

    Hunting in Harmony?

For the most part I try to be thoughtful in my planning and make it clear that my hunting will take a back seat to family. However, my wife is very resistant to doing things for herself, so I encourage her to pursue activities that she enjoys. When she is being good about that she can see that...

Boom sticks are cool...but show off your bow!

Here's my recurve bow. I credit it as the sole reason why I am a bow hunter today. My dad got it back in the late 60s from a friend in college who was making bows. As a little kid I was fascinated by this bow and always wanted to shoot it. When I finally got a house with a backyard in...

    2024 Turkey Season!

I've got 3 tags in Illinois. One I will hunt with a buddy and one I will hunt with my dad and one I will hunt by myself. I'd love to go 3 for 3, but I'll be honest, I just want to be involved in at least 1 turkey flopping. It seems like I go about 4-5 years between harvesting a turkey.

The Big Snip - How bad is it?

Mine was super painless and not a big deal at all.

    Ben's semi-live 2024 hunt thread

I just finalized my Spring 2024 turkey hunting plans. Unfortunately one of my weekends is going to be a little dicey because it is right after my daughter's birthday and she is also being confirmed in the church that Friday night. Hopefully I can get a couple good days of hunting in that season...

Buying My First Big Game Hunting Rifle

I have recently been thinking about this. I am more of an archery/shotgun hunter but I am thinking it might be nice to get a good rifle for predator hunting or possibly a rifle hunt in a western state. My dad has a nice .270 that I am sure I could borrow, but there is something about having...

Kinda live Mississippi deer tracking thread

I've had three with little to no blood trail. Fortunately I saw each of them fall. In one case, the lung deflated and stopped up the exit wound so no blood came out. In another the arrow stuck in the offside shoulder and then broke off, entrance wound was high so there was no blood coming out of...

Kinda live Mississippi deer tracking thread

These were very interesting stories. Thanks for sharing them. I feel like I learned a lot. I have shot 5 deer and never had trouble finding them but this is a reminder that I have been pretty lucky and I this provides a lot of insight into what happens when deer don't go down within sight. Keep...

    Ben's semi-live 2024 hunt thread

It's Tim e to start the 2024 hunt thread. I went out yesterday for coyote. I really don't know what I am doing, so my strategy it just to be out in the woods and hope that my call will bring one in. So far I have been unsuccessful and this year was no different. But I got to spend some time...

Seeth's unexpected FULL fall of "good" hunts

Hear me out on this one. You need to add on to the house with a room big enough to hang that trophy. I know you're thinking that is too much expense for just to hang one elk, but honestly you will need more space next year and or the year after that and after that, etc. It's really a wise...
