    What Caliber

I had a 6.5x284, after I shot it out I put a 284 barrel on. I like the 284 better, both are plagued by a lack of consistent brass availability at times. If you find brass buy a bunch and don't abuse it with over book loads.

How do the 150gr, 7mm Sierra Tipped GameKing hold together?

I think I've shot 7 or 8 elk, and a bunch of deer and pronghorn with the 165 TGK out of a 284. at about 2800 fps. Usually about 60-80% weight retention depending on the target and the distance. I really like this bullet. A bit tougher than the eld x and the traditional game king in my...

    Athlon Scopes

I've got a FFP Helos 2-12. I really like it. Bit heavy but other than that it's great. The best "glass quality" in the world won't correct for poor mechanics and function in a rifle scope. So far mine perform mechanically, dial correctly, maintain zero, and the reticle is very useable even...

    Speed Kills

That's kind of my point. You can be way over pressure before noticing those signs.

    Speed Kills

It's kind of interesting that Wetherby's listed specs for Hammers seem pretty in line with conventional bullets and traditional load numbers. Sort of slightly contrary to direction provided by Hammer, that they can go faster for free........ just watch for pressure signs. My guess is that a...

    "Overpopulation" Let er rip!

Folks are interchangeably using chapter 28 and the new chapter 34 regulation in this discussion. Similar, but very different regs. 34 is what guides these damage hunts, 28 is damage payments. Both regs are being reviewed at the next commission meeting. Comment period is closed but here is a...

    Elk Unit 27 Grizzly bears

Those maps are based on known verified sightings, collar locations or conflicts. The "boundary" or line is a smoothed buffer around those points. Some points fall outside that buffer as well, it's kind of a density and proximity thing. I'd do everything right if I were you, but wouldn't...

EIS Public Comment: Establishment of a Nonessential Experimental Population of the Gray Wolf in the State of CO

This rule isn't about "spending money to reintroduce wolves". This rule isn't what kept the court battles going/wolves listed. It is a rule that will give managers and producers more tools and protections when dealing with wolves. MT, if memory serves, had a 10(j) population and non-10(j)...

    PRC Cartridges?

So Hornady designed a cartridge around a Berger bullet???? My uneducated guess is they designed around one of their own bullets like the A-tip or heavy ELD choices. If you want to shoot lightweight 7mm bullets I think there are already ample options. I hope the 7 prc is a success with...

    Age data and skull character

My guess is that nutrition has a good part to play in the size/score equation. Some of the oldest bears I have seen were tiny females. Older males often seem to have more pronounced crests, as your photos show. There are physical characteristics to inform you of age but some are pretty subtle...

    Sierra Game Changers for Elk?

I've shot 3 elk with the 165-.284 version, along with several deer. Elk harvested ranged from 80 yards to 380. Recovered the bullet from the farthest elk. If memory serves it weighed around 110 grains. I really like the bullet so far. From my limited experience i'd say a bit tougher than the 162...

    7mm Rem Mag help

I think this is a product of three shot "groups". You can randomly shoot decent three shot groups, but that doesn't mean that combo is repeatable. The only thing I can tell from 3 shot groups is what won't shoot. Once I start shooting groups, 5 is the minimum. You really want to see what...

    Who's shooting a 284 win?

Had a 6.5x284, when that barrel was toast I screwed on a straight 284 barrel. For me, I knew it would feed and I already had a pile of Lapua brass so it was a simple choice. I like it, nice round. About tops for me on a rifle I want to shoot very much in a sporter weight rifle. Mine is on a...

    Wildife Task force 90-10, etc.

Many TF members have defended set asides by stating "this won't affect the resident opportunity at all......you can still go buy a general elk license.....". Having a tag in your pocket is only one part of the opportunity equation. In many parts of WY that opportunity also comes down to...

    New Scope

Not sure what you want it for, but if I had a SWFA 3-9 on every single rifle I own you wouldn't hear me complain about it.

    Trijicon scopes?

I've got a 3-9 accupower with the mil square. I like it quite a bit. Tracks, dials, and keeps zero. Not the scope I'd pick for a bunch of dialing but it functions correctly. The illumination is nice and the reticle is nice and useful illuminated or not. I wish it was ffp like everything...

Anyone replace trigger springs in Remington 7400 or 7600 rifle?

Replaced the spring and sear out of a kit in a friends pump rifle. Super simple.

    Which Scope for New Rifle

I've got an accupower 3-9 with the mil reticle on my most used rifle. I really like it. The illumination is nice as well. It has dialed accurately and retained zero well. Some of their new models look nice, although I haven't used them or seen them in person. I much prefer scopes with...

Standard Cow Tag vs. Reduced (WY)

One benefit for me, is I can put in for a type 4 and a type 6 in the initial draw, then buy a general tag. In my area there are getting to be pretty few leftover type 6 tags for the second draw and pretty low odds of drawing. So with a little more money it's a better bet for me in my area, in...

    .280AI bullets question.

When running your numbers I would look at drop and drift. I don't believe energy values really tell you much. As others have mentioned, you will see a more noticeable difference beyond 500 yards when comparing the two.
