New Western hunter needs advice on Mule deer hunting

Lots of good advice in this thread. I would only add that if you're going to bowhunt mulies you would do well to get your hands on Dwight Schuh's excellent book, Hunting Open Country Mule Deer. That book has been in print for many years and still remains one of the best primers on hunting mule...

    Western camo patterns

Open earth tone plaids work just as well, or often better, than most camo patterns. That said, ASAT or the some of the Predator designs are very effective camo patterns.

I shoot the Montec 100's. They are a quality head but I agree that they are hard to sharpen.

    Matthews Switchback XT?

I have a Mathews Switchback XT and it's a great bow. In fact I'm very happy with it. That said, I think you should listen to the above advice and check out as many bows as you can before deciding which bow to purchase. What works for me may not be the best choice for you. I use my XT is...

Rocky Mt. Elk Foundation, yea or nay?

To be fair, the RMEF created a separate fund and a separate fundraising effort to build the new headquarters. In other words, conservation dollars were not used to build the new headquarters. And anyone who had visited the old headquarters in Missoula would have certainly seen the obvious need...

Anyone use a 45.70 for elk?

I certainly understand how iron sights can be a liability in low-light conditions. Worse yet, my Marlin still has the stock buckhorn sights on the gun. I've been thinking of puting an XS Sight Systems winged ghost ring sight on it. Even so, the low light will still be a problem. My thinking is...

Anyone use a 45.70 for elk?

For several years my hunting rifle of choice has been a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight 30.06 topped with a 2.5 x 8 Leupold scope. This gun has served me well for my elk and deer hunts. However, this year I have decided to hunt the roosevelt elk which are native to the thick woods found on...

    Got our Moose

Congrats on the moose. Real nice. I usually put in for those moose hunts above Spokane as well - and perhaps someday I might actually draw one of those tags. But it's real nice to see pics of someone who actually got one of those moose. Again, congratulations.
