    2004 deer hunting goals

Instead of Wyoming elk this year, I'm headed to the Suwannee River Ranch in Florida for European red deer. I'm planning to take two 'lopes in Butte County, S. Dakota with my slide action .243 on opening morning. Opening day of Black Hills "any deer" season, I'll be sitting just inside the...

    Antelope Winter Kill Pics

Old timers I knew when I was a kid told me much about antelope. They said antelope thrived during the era before buffalo were nearly wiped out. 'Lopes stayed with the buffalo herds for protection from the icy winds and to feed where bison plowed through waist high snow. What occurs now goes...

    No Zoo Hunting ????

I had a great time hunting exotic axis deer at Brady Ranch in Florida. High Adventure Ranch in Missouri also offers affordable hunts. The day is coming when free hunting on Public Lands will vanish. Your "leaders" in Washington DC like the money they receive from lobbyists too much. Watch for...

This is my speed goat from 03

I like the wide bases and well defined prongs. Nice trophy! Jack

    Roosevelt or Rocky ???

I've taken both species. I feel that the Rocky variety is more prone to migrate long distances through roadless territory. They can be difficult to locate under certain stormy conditions common to the Bighorns. I've only shot two Roosevelt elk,(near Coos Bay, OR)although my friend called...

The dog days of mule deer

Prairie dog shooting will burn up 1,800 rounds of .223 between now and October antelope season. The beggars breed like crazy and all we're really doing is holding the towns from expanding any further. Last month, my friend and I nailed 17 coyotes during 4 outings near Wall, South Dakota. Used...

    Gray market optics?

CABELA's often discounts their hunting stuff in January to reduce inventory. Bushnell H2O series have brighter and clearer optics than Nikon. Oh, I forgot that some of the guys on this website disapprove of discounted binoculars for big game hunting. Jack

My Dad died on the 20th

I've been wearing Dad's coats, his gloves, his favorite hat, his watch. Helps me mourn but can't explain why. On Feb. 15th I shot his 22 pistol for over an hour at can targets. It brought back many happy memories. I know he is gone from this world but seems like Dad sort of continues in...

    A 377+ whitetail.

I'm sure someone is salivating over this freakish animal. But from my view at least, its not anything like a mature buck should appear. Equivilant to a human giant that would never win a body building award despite 7 ft height and stronger than two normal men. But there are trophy hunters...

My Dad died on the 20th

My Dad was my hero. When I was a kid, he was this big, strong man who knew everyone in Powell, Garland, and Cody. Wherever we stopped in his old pick-up Dad talked to people he knew. I kind of thought he was a celebrity or something until I was about 10 or so. Dad always obeyed game laws...

    Buffalo

I hunted buff once and only once in my life. A private herd reduction in Harding County, South Dakota related to drought and costs to bring in hay. After a long crawl, I was within 125 yards or so and waited for a broadside shot. One 150 gr. Fail Safe bullet from my .308 dropped the bull...

    Has anyone ever done a...

Chloride from the bleach will continue to eat away the skull unless neutralized. Typically, ordinary tap water with a small amount of vinegar is used. The skull is soaked in this solution. Paint your horns with a latex based primer. then top coat with flat black. Gloss black looks fake. Jack

    wyoming antelope??

I suggest looking closely at area surrounding Colony, Wyoming. North-east corner. In my opinion, this area is under hunted with numerous heavy horned bucks. They're mining bentonite in some areas but this does not affect hunting opportunities. Jack

My Dad died on the 20th

My Dad died on the 20th. He was 81 and suffered from heart and stroke problems. His death is really a blessing and a celebration of passing into Heaven to be with Jesus, whom he loved. Dad was quite the big game hunter in his time. Hunted everything Wyoming had to offer with his 300 Savage...

    Trying to post photo again

Yes, it is my buck. What kind of question was that? I shoot a nice buck like this about every four years or so. Remainder of the time I nail forkies and does. The real trophy is on the dinner plate. The scope is a Simmons Pro Hunter 2X-7X from cheaperthandirt.com. Paid about $65. for it...

Celeb hunt, who would it be?

I'd like to hunt axis deer in Pakistan with Roy Chapman Andrews, the former curator of NY Metro Museum of Natural History. But we need a time machine as Roy has been dead for several decades. You should read his book titled, This Business of Exploring. Jack

    Wyo Antelope (pics)

Nice shootin'. The goat pictured with the lady has very unusual horns. I've been hunting 'lopes for over 35 years and have never spotted one quite like that. Hope you have it mounted. If you don't mind, would you please explain to me how to post photos. I'm having difficulties. Thank you...

    Dad's 32 Special story

My Dad is nearly 82 now and lived in western Wyoming for most of his life. He told me this story yesterday afternoon and asked me to post it for you all. In 1971, Dad was working a project at the power plant in Guernsey, Wyoming. Elk herds thrive in the piney ridges just north of town. Dad...
