    358 winchester

OK, here's the question. I just picked up an older 6.5 Creedmoor Savage Axis. It has a Nikko scope and sling. I got it for a fair price. I have no use for another 6.5 anything, so I'm planning to rebarrel it. I think a 25 needmore would fill a niche, but dies and barrels are not really caught...

One month to spring Where's the gophers?

YUP only a month away. Almost every year around the first of the year we start to see a few gophers sticking their heads out of the snow. And, at the end of February, We can see quite a few Out on the calm sunny days, even when the snow is on the ground. Mostly in town gophers, the "country"...

What is your take on the new 7mm Backcountry?

I think it sounds very interesting. But it may be too soon to make a good decision about it.

I'm feeling a little pushed out up here in MT.

I know the Information is from 2022 but Its upward trend is evident. WOW! I knew I saw a LOT of nonresident license plates this year hunting. What to do about it? I'm not going to be a Scrooge and say NO nonresidents. But what I'm seeing is they all seem to be concentrated on the BIG block...

    Granddaughter's first antelope tag

Well dang the not-so-little GD( 15 now) got her first antelope tag. YA! In fact, we all did but it's not our first rodeo. She has taken deer out as far as 240 ish yards. But antelope are very different, no trees or anything to judge distance, or any perspective at all. I made a target, I will...

    6.5 STW vs 6.5 Weatherby

There can't be much difference. Both use a full-sized 375 H&H brass, like the 8mm rem mag. Would it be as simple as using some of my 8mm brass and necking down to make an STW? Of course, I'd have to find a doner and get a barrel.

September 1st Montana upland opening, who, what, where?

It kinda relates to the weather, I guess. It looks like the fire restrictions are slowly being dropped. We would love to take a road trip to someplace in the brakes, but like I said the weather thing. We could do Sharptail close by but that usually takes a LOT of walking, no dog so it's twice...

Maybe a way to spend my "Easy money" question

OK let's start with "easy Money" I've been supplementing my extracurricular budget By working security work for a big security company. I do some fill-in work for the full-timers. But mostly I do "Extra" events. 90% is overnight stuff. Like when a business's fire suppuration system goes down I...

Dang, I think that's "close enough" for coyotes.

I misted a coyote last trip out, that I thought I should have hit. I had some free time and the wind was light, so I slipped up to the range. It was 90* light swirly winds mostly west and to the east so I was not surprised at the results. I drove down to the backer boards and stapled 3 targets...

    No Way!

One of our 3 ferries that cross the Missouri River. One is in Carter, Virgille ( coal banks landing), and McClelland/Stafford Ferry. We went across the Virgille one, Sunday fishing it cuts off 100 miles ish. Anyway, there are very few people that cross this time of year, harvest and hunting...

    Montana shed hunters Be advised.

This is new. The Sunriver Game range and the rest of them I guess, require a conservation/fishing license to access the land even to shed hunt. I was just there, as well as the Willow Creek boat ramp. It is replacing the "State use permit". Check it out all the fwp access areas require it as...

Red lights green lights will they mix and turn yellow and spook pigs?

OK, I'm going on a pig hunt in Feb and would like opinions. The pig feeders are continuously lit with green lights. We all have red lights on our rifles. Red and green light makes yellow light. Will it spook the pigs if we turn on our red shooting lights?

    OH my aching rotator cuffs

On opening day of duck season, my brother-in-law packed in about a mile and a half pulling a two-wheel wheelbarrow full of decoys and ammo and maybe lunch too. We each pulled the barrow through tall weeds and mud, and each had a handle trading sides to rest the other arm. I had no idea I was...

It's all fun and games till there are two dead deer when your a mile and a half from the truck at sundown

I had two whitetail doe tags in my pocket and a plan. I knew a place where we might fill them. It's a BMA next to a closed waterfowl management area. My boy and I walked out in a dry drain ditch about a mile and a quarter and slipped up to the top, and set up to wait. We could see out over three...

Hawthorn trees, Good for the brain, and heart

My neighbor has a Hawthorn tree and lets me pick them. I have read there wild in places too. It takes about 10 pounds hips to get around 6 cups of juice. I freeze them first to break up their cell structure, then simmer them for about 3 hours, mashing them gently as they cook down. Their seeds...

Grouse hunting at 8000 feet and 34*

September first opines upland birds and doves. It is also the opening of archery for big game. I don't archery hunt. The 15th is bear and wolf. A buddy and I loaded up the 4wheelers and headed uphill, looking for Duskie and ruff grouse. They tend to like high ridges with open areas in the...

We are starting load development, 7MMx57 AI.

I'm still fire-forming the AI part, but we have enough brass to start loads. I want to keep them around 2700, or 2800 fps Similar to the factory 7x57 in a 140-ish bullet. It's for a small framed 14-year-old girl. She has been shooting for 8 years and is very good. But does not enjoy heavy...

How many deer tags can a licensed Montana hunter have?

I have my over-the-counter "A" buck tag and 5 asst doe tags. Of them, 4 are from the "Surplus tags". and of that 3 are Mule deer doe tags. It looks like I'll get picked for at least one and maybe two more. Not to mention I have good numbers in the damage hunt list. I also turned down 2 cow elk...

    Swan and crane

OK, we are still waiting on the draw for Antelope. But the swan and crane draw was held and posted. We all got a swan tag and the D-I-L got a crane tag. I prefer the crane but a swan tag is just as hard to draw, and fun too.
