If you are not a horse person, any prep will help but nothing will truly prepare you for the long rides and riding horseback each and every day. I've done two big time horseback hunts in AK and wouldn't care to do another, got tossed off a couple times. Biggest thing is to get the stirrup...
I've got an old Bradley electric that uses the wood chip "pucks". Has been a good unit.
I'd definitely go with electric. Charcoal / wood requires too much babysitting to control temps. Can't hardly run a gas smoker low enough for cold smoking.
Plus, electric is just handy. No fuel source...
Always find the arrow tuning discussion interesting, I'm just a bow hunter, not a target archer or archery nerd. Have been killing deer with archery gear for about 50 years and have really never even tested an arrow like this or even cared about it. My arrows go where I'm aiming if I do my...
Good thread.
I've got my Grandfathers .22 Remington pump with an old Weaver K3 that was his squirrel rifle. Scope is a bit foggy.
Think I'll send it in to someplace like Vintage gun scopes and get it reworked, then give it to my grandson.
Lots of good guides at Port Clinton. We went several times with Angel Eyes and also with Tibbels Charter Service. Both took good care of us.
Something that has changed ..... Used to mostly drift and cast front weighted spinners with night crawlers so you actually hooked and fought the fish...
I've successfully dipped a hole with backhoe bucket, then scooped a tree with the backhoe bucket, carried it over to the hole, then place in hole with the backhoe bucket.
Easy way to transplant good trees growing elsewhere on your property and locate them where you want.
I've planted around 40,000 trees on my place.
Maples are about like weeds around here, pretty easy and forgiving.
So long as you don't destroy all the roots digging it, then be as gentle as possible (can be tough) getting it into the new hole at proper depth, nice and straight, etc. it will...
I can't speak to your particular issues but there are lots of open surface coal mines in my neck of the woods in southern IN & IL. When they get done mining, they clean things up very well, replant habitat, create beautiful lakes, etc. and have created some of the finest fishing, hunting and...
Lots of moisture is definitely an issue in AK. I've used a .300 Weatherby on nearly everything in AK; brown bear, black bear, caribou, moose and wolf with zero issues.
Only exception was a Dall ram which required a pre 64, .270 Win, because that's what Jack O'Conner said to use.
Airline travel has really changed over the years. Used to be that taking a flight was a really big deal and it was rather expensive, not even plausible for many. Those that did travel via airlines were typically rather "cleaned up" in dress and appearance and general manners were a whole lot...
Killed my first buck / deer in 1977. Little button buck with a 35# Bean Pearson recurve, Herters fiberglass arrow and a Bear Razorhead.
Weren't many deer around our part of Indiana in those days, killing a deer was a big deal.
Grumpy old man complaint .....
I wish the rifle makers would quit putting all their efforts into coming up with new calibers and spend a little more time making good looking, nice, wood / blued hunting rifles instead of all this black plastic crap that looks like a Lego set. :p
I filled our wood shed in March with a bunch of really nice cherry that had blown down in wind storms.
It's all split up and drying. Will be ready by heating season.
Looks like we're all set for a Tri State Whitetail murder fest slamma jamma.
Indiana firearms & archery
Illinois firearms and archery
Kansas firearms
Don't want near that many, but could harvest about 12 deer total.
