    Lieutenant’s Elk

Nice. Tell your son to get a couple thousand hours experience and a few hundred under nods and give the 160th a try if he really wants to fly for a living.

How many bullets for backpack elk hunt?

Forget about how accurate your are, I want to know where and how you kill an elk every year! 20 rounds for a one shot one kill deadeye would be a lifetime supply of ammo given even above average success rates.

Great News! I am able to take my 14 YO son elk hunting this year

He has been around firearms a lot and is a dang good shot (I guess having a big brother in special operations and being trained by a SF sniper instructor gives you good habits). I didn't know about the discounted youth tags. I am definitely looking into those. Thanks everyone for your tips.

Great News! I am able to take my 14 YO son elk hunting this year

Nice thought as a non-res I’m not sure I’m $800 interested in keeping him occupied. Bear tag at $100 would be ok except knowing my luck he’d get one and then I’d have to deal with a bear. lol.

Great News! I am able to take my 14 YO son elk hunting this year

Second rifle. The .22 is a good idea especially with a suppressor on it.

Great News! I am able to take my 14 YO son elk hunting this year

My ex (his mom) is on board with him missing some school so he can be in elk camp. He has been asking for years to go and she has always found an excuse to not allow it. Now he has gotten her convinced. My concern is he won't be hunting, just going along. Any suggestions to keep his spirits...

    Missing CO Hunters

The Colorado Sun website says “no obvious injuries on their bodies or initial signs of foul play” it would seem a lightening strike would leave some obvious signs, no?

    Morning thermals

Most of the time early in the morning the objective is to get in and glass. If you’re far enough away to be glassing it’s pretty likely the thermals are getting to what you’re glassing. If there is a ridge or valley between you and the animal the thermals are likely not going both up and down...

    Educate me on wall tents

I have a Davis and have owned it for almost 10 years. Except for being a bit dirty you would think it is new. If you have 4 guys regularly I would think about the next size up, this is a buy once cry once deal. Mine is a Grizzly (16x20) and four is great in it, 6 is a little crowded. Some year...

Wall tent stove? Burning nut coal

For those who have a wall tent with the barrel type stove - have you ever burnt nut coal in it and if so how’d it go? Contemplating buying some coal to burn at night during second rifle. TIA

    CPW 2026 Strategic Plan Input

I just got an email from COW asking for input on their 10 year strategic plan for 2026-20236. I’m not too hopeful for the future of hunting in Colorado. The “Who’s Listening” list (I.e. those who will screen the results) lists people from Prosono and The Equity Project. No sportsman’s...

    Colorado points question.

My group is in a similar predicament with elk and we are trying to decide wth to do. We are leaning toward burning them in 2027. Mostly because that is the first year the full group can make it for sure. We have a mix of older guys (dads/uncles) and younger guys (sons/nephews) and the dang...

Colorado Elk Unit 41,42,411 1st Rifle

The parts of those units on the Grand Mesa are like a 4 wheeler convention during elk season. Access is very easy, in fact it is more difficult to get away from trails than to find them.

    Scope selection ideas

I’m not sure the 5.5x bottom end would work in timber as a minimum magnification. I’ll look into it more though.

    Scope selection ideas

Depends. Hunting I dial it at a setting and know my hold from +/- 200 yards that way if I have to shoot quick I’m not monkeying with a dial. At the range I make adjustments. I’ve been a MOA guy but a lot of my range buddies are mil because they shoot that way. I like Luepold plus their...

    Scope selection ideas

Speed leaving the barrel, flatness, energy out at range due to speed.
