    Anyone else getting antsy?

Good luck to all of you guys! Leaving here Labor Day for Louisiana gator hunt and redfish. Only out of state hunt this year. Points again for Wyoming, might have enough for a decent pronghorn area next year. Whitetails here in Missouri from mid September through the end of the year. Looking at...

Help, I need a new pronghorn rifle! (Update)

I ended up getting my phone out and taking video of the 3rd deer. I actually ran it off when I stood up to start my field dressing. If I knew how I would post the video.

What trucks do you regret selling?

There are 3 over the years that I wish I still had, the first was not really a pickup but a 1964 ElCamino, 283 4 speed 48,000 on the clock when I bought it. The next was a 1979 GMC High Sierra, 350 with a granny low four speed, my first new vehicle. The last one was a 1961 Ford Unibody Custom...

Another ZZ Top member is gone

I have seen them a few times over the years, the most memorable was the first night of the Eliminator tour at the Scope in Norfolk Virginia, Sammy Hagar opened for them on the last night of his 3 Lock Box tour, what a fantastic show!!!

Small Bullets (.224) and BIG game

We used to have two neighbor boys that piled up several deer between them when they were first learning to hunt. The rifle of choice was a Ruger 77/22H. Yes, the old .22 Hornet, they never lost a deer that I’m aware of. I’m quite sure that the various .22 caliber cartridges are all capable of...

Help, I need a new pronghorn rifle! (Update)

I’ve been hunting suppressed for several years now. Yes, there is some noise but I have seen deer at close range pay absolutely no attention to the sound. Hogs will run around in circles, it’s as if they don’t know where the sound is coming from. This past fall I was hunting with my .308 in an...

The big 18 and adult things?

I retired from the military at age 38. I retired from my second career as a machinist/toolmaker at 64. At 67 I went back to work as a gunsmith. I enjoy working and it affords me the freedom to mostly do whatever I want. I did save a little over the years. Several years ago I had an accident and...

    New Bolt Action Rifle Recommendations

I have 3 good loads for my .308, mine are all hand loaded. I have a 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip load for our local woods whitetail. Another Ballistic Tip 150 grain for longer ranges and a 150 grain Partition for black bear. Take a look at Federal Fusion in factory ammo, I know several people...

    Opinions please!!!

I have mostly Leupolds, they have decent glass, are fairly durable and they are light weight. Us old fat guys like light weight. I have an older Vari xII 2-7 that has been on so many rifles that I have lost count and it’s never let me down. I have some newer VX3 2.5-8 scopes that have been...

    New Bolt Action Rifle Recommendations

Congrats! I hope you enjoy them, it’s hard to go wrong with a .308.

    Base camp tent

If the weather is bad a tent can get crowded fast. I have a 4 person (Big Agnes Seedhouse 4) and it got pretty tight with my cold weather hunting gear, heater and cooler inside. I’m upgrading to a Kodiak in the near future. Just haven’t decided on the exact size yet. I like plenty of room.

    Economical vertical smoker

I have an older version of this one, works great and has plenty of pellet capacity for over night smoking (pork butts) Bluetooth control.

    Your preference with trigger lbs?

Interesting, I can shoot a two stage trigger with no problem but I can’t stand gritting feeling creep. I’m actually starting to prefer a two stage trigger I think. Your take on overtravel is something I’m coming to realize that I like also. I have a Jewel trigger on my bench rest rifle and the...

    New Bolt Action Rifle Recommendations

The Remington 700 is very well supported by after market parts. There are many clones on the market so repairs are pretty much guaranteed for the foreseeable future. I work as a gunsmith in a small shop and we see more Savage 110 rifles than Remington 700s by a large margin. The Browning rifles...

    New Bolt Action Rifle Recommendations

Of the choices you mentioned I would hands down prefer the Remington. I’m not a fan of the X-mark trigger but there are several good aftermarket options. A good gunsmith can make that trigger usable but I’m a trigger snob so…

Is a custom rifle worth it

Most of my rifles have a few custom touches but I don’t consider them custom, simply customized. The only real custom rifle I own is a bench rest for score rifle, Stolle Panda, right bolt left port, glued in to a McMillan stock, Krieger barrel and Jewel trigger. It carries a 36x Sightron and is...

    First Buck

My first buck was a little guy 52 years ago. We had very few deer back then and I was lucky to get anything. I was leaning against my Jeep eating potted meat and crackers when he stepped into an open spot about 75 yards away and I whacked him offhand with my open sighted .270.

    Black Vultures

You can get depredation permits to kill them here. I drew a managed deer hunt tag for a state park last fall and one of the rangers told me they got permits to kill 100 of them but couldn’t come up with a safe way to do it. I think a lot of them are getting shot in this area but there are...

    Deer - lets see em

Just got my 2025 buck back from the taxidermist the other day. I asked for something a little different and I think he pulled it off.
