Monday is the grouse opener here in CO. Gotta make a decision if I am chasing sharpies or dusky grouse. This will be my first season with my own bird dog. A simple black lab I’ve been training myself since I brought him home in February. I feel like I’ve been waiting my whole life for Monday...
Hey All,
@R.K. you continued to stoke a fire in my belly. Serendipitously I met a bunch of guys from Pheasants Forever this week out hunting. This all led to “the talk.” My wife just green lit me to start researching a puppy for training this summer. We have two doodles I love dearly, but Leo...
I'm currently in my first bird dog journey, biggest lesson I've learned in my pups first year of life is that I have needed way more training than he. A lot of what I wanted in a dog came naturally to the pup, it was me who had no clue how to run with what was already programmed. Read up on...
Took dog to some riverside country. It held doves over the summer, none this morning. 4 turkeys, 3 deer, a few ducks and geese. Dogs first trip out hunting since getting her back from trainer in Feb. We've done a lot of training and practice over the summer. She was great, sat in her place...
I saw that outfit with all the dogs at Plentywood.
A different outfit near there ask
Me where to go where they wouldn't come across young pheasants, but would have Shaptails. His dogs caught some young pheasants.
I wish this dog training would be banned, at least in August and September.
We got an English cocker spaniel last year and I don’t think I will ever be without one again. He has been a great family dog. Loves playing with the kids and bird hunting. Small enough he can travel with us. Tons of energy outside but you come inside and he’d sit all day on the couch...
There are some really solid trainers here, so hopefully they will chime in.
For guns - introduce the dog to gunshots when young. Go to a trap range and walk around with the pup and don't act excited, etc. Just play it off likes it's no big deal. You want the dog to associate gunshots with...
We’ve hunted ruffed grouse, mountain quail, sharpies, huns, sage grouse, doves, pheasants, geese, ducks, and a swan or two with this old girl. She’s retired now, but most shortcomings have been ours, not hers. She’s done whatever we’ve asked of her.
Someone told us that if you have a dog...
Hello,
I’m scheduled for a 1/2 day pheasant hunt in a few weeks. It’s a “wildlife ranch”, so they’ll be planted farm pheasants. Accompanying me will be a friend/mentor who’s training his young lab, as well as a friend of his who has a pointer. The farm also has dogs & handler that I can hire...
They're basically a jumbo dove. Never met my grandpa but my dad always tells the story that he said in the great depression, he and his siblings were some of the only kids to have much meat to eat and that was pigeons. Couldn't afford to keep the meat off the farm supposedly.
Some summer bird work with some of my Brittanys.
The adult male is my stud dog, Rocky. He has one of the top three hardest points I've seen after quite a few years of training professionally.
The liver pup, Eleven, was sired by Rocky and my female named Blixen. I breed for light but leggy...
It’s dated, but I have used the training method in “gun dog” and “water dog”. Super easy for me and it worked with all five of my Chocolate Labs. I started them early and the traning was fun and easy.
I have pics of a guy that was camped at the Plentywood fairgrounds for two straight months (August and September) with 57 dogs in a horse trailer. Training on public land sharpies because “they hold nice”.
The 10 day resident only opener is the same thing they do in ND. Seems like it is a...
We have an older lab that has seizures. We tried the medicine but it was sad to see it kill his general drive to do anything lab like so we stopped. My wife did a ton of research and we learned that it could be his food. We switched to a Costco brand and he has gone several years without any...
