    Pack workouts

I use a 40 lb bag of wood pellets for my Traeger. When I am done training in the fall, I use them. Dog food works well too, but if going in griz country I don't want to smell like a dog food bag. So wood pellets it is. Super easy and nothing to store.

Did my dog get bit by a copperhead?

Interesting. My dog was bit by a rattler in west river sodak on a property thats known for them. The one year I gave any of our hunting dogs the first rattler vaccine, he got bit. Leg swelled up a bunch and he limped, vet said not to hunt him for the last 4 days of the trip. He howled and...

    Preferred Upland Loads?

No cripples, no misses, just pillows. Opening day saw very close birds, and a new dog meant only choosing the right shots where the dog worked right. Which means ranges which the 7.5 was very effective. And 7.5 is closer in size to a 6 than an 8. It’s not my preferred, but it did work.

Did my dog get bit by a copperhead?

I’ve seen the rattlesnake prevention training. I’m not interested in abusing my dogs that way for the results. My dogs aren’t that tough. I’ve never bounced into rattlers with my bird dogs hunting. I try to hunt smart during hot periods. My understanding after talking with my birddog...

    Creature of habit…

Wife was out at a dog training class and stopped on the way home for a coffee to stay awake. She ended up getting a cappuccino and when she got home she proceeded to wake me up. I didn't mind. ;)

Did my dog get bit by a copperhead?

Mine takes one to the snout on our ranch every year. She climbs me like a jungle gym at avoidance training, but every damn summer she slinks in with her nose as big as a Folgers can and lies down on the couch panting. The swelling drops to her neck the next day and then disappears. So far...

    What Ammo is This?

Could be a .22 cal blank that was used for a dog training dummy launcher.

How far do you stay upwind of elk?

I’m guessing they didn’t get a good nose full because of weird air currents. Can’t say I have ever had an animal ignore my scent. Air currents do funny things. I’ve seen some odd things dog training and the only explanation is the air is doing things to the scent you can’t see and don’t understand.

    NR Upland Seasons (LC3901)

Dog training dates remain unchanged, correct? Does this do anything to stop the dog trainers from training their dogs the first 10 days of the season or does it just disallow 'hunting' those 10 days? If the latter, I can't imagine it will curtain much of the worst behavior and issues.

The pigeon loft has 2 new residence

I just started building my first pigeon loft. I have a pair of shooter pigeons that I bought a while back for working with my dogs, but they are currently residing in a dog crate much like the one in your video. Will pick up a few squeakers to join them in the new house once it's complete. My...

HB 450 was the attempt to fix the dog training issue, along with the 10 day resident public land season. https://bills.legmt.gov/#/laws/bill/2/LC4148?open_tab=sum Combined, the removal of NR opportunity on public land, Block Mgt & Open fields, along with the new requirements for licensing for...

    ‘25-‘26 Upland Bird Thread

Not to derail this, but FF is one of the most misunderstood facets of dog training. All you are doing is using pressure and release to make retrieving a non-optional task, just like a sit, a down stay, recall, etc. I doubt you folks are using natural cooperation to reinforce those under...

That’s fair. Not every dog handles pressure the same. Sometimes you have to adapt the approach.

    Wirehaired Pointing Griffon training

there are a ton of options depending on comfort level and experience. Id suggest starting with a local club/dog store and going through some classes. But you can get a ton of good step by step vides on YouTube.

One more question. Can the dog trainers who are training large strings of dogs still train their dogs on public land the first 10 days of the season?

I’ve had good success with FF with the GSPs I’ve owned. They thrived with the training. I’ve tried it a few times with my setters. It hasn’t worked so far. They get emotional and ask why don’t I love them. I get weak and give up with a big hug.

    Grouse! Let’s See Them

I am. Missoula area. It’s the weirdest thing, I saw plenty of blues during spring bear and this summer when on training hikes with my dog. I’ve hit most of those areas this season, and no birds.
