    Montana’s best steaks

The Edgar Bar had been my favorite but changed ownership awhile back , I went right after they reopened, they had taken pictures off the wall but didn’t hang anything up to replace them , made it look empty, I thought that wasn’t a smart move. You shouldn’t take things down unless you have...

Screwing over the Non-resident (or not)?

Pitter-patter... Also tired of all the tough talk about moving west. You going to pack the truck or flap the gums? More foot stamping. Oh, and let's not forget your buddy @rjthehunter says there's declining resident hunters in Wyoming... When the NR Hunter migration to Wyoming starts, be...

    Take Back Your Elk

Can you take an honest look at the people and agencies managing wildlife in the west and tell us that you think you could put managing all that minutia on their shoulders and get an outcome that is acceptable, and within a budget that is realistic?

SOLD: 22 acre lot near Bozeman

With mixed emotions, I’ve decided to put my remaining MT property up for sale. I co-own it with my son who originally intended to build a home on it, but life and career have taken him back east and he wants to invest the capital in a rental property that produces some extra income. The...

Montana missouri breaks sheep 2025 regs.

This section above implies that commingling might not be an issue. It also implies that killing wandering rams might not be a sound management strategy. It's pure naivete or intentionally misleading to say that most producers haven't seen bighorns so the issue must not stem from contact with...

Population Growth and Hunting in Rocky Mountain States

It's an interesting argument. I personally am happy to continue living in the Midwest, and making a trip every other year to hunt elk currently. If I lost the opportunity to do so, there is no question that the idea of moving west would be rolling around in my mind. I don't think I'm alone in this.

'07 Tunda - let's hear your reviews and feedback or warnings

I definitely plan to have the frame inspected for the known rust issue that occurs. Positive it's an '07 with 4.7L. And I know if I don't buy it he's got a couple other friends who want it. I haven't discussed pricing yet with my buddy, but I'm not worried about that. He's the type of guy...

    Devaluing Non-Residents

Chill out - I was referring to those who suggest that is the right answer as a threat to those that question tag costs. The "be thankful you aren't paying market, if you did it would be $5,000" reaction is like "be glad you can drive your car on a city street, we could charge you $1,000". It...

    Paying for Comforts with Wildlife

I'd be even more concerned for the President's ability to cogitate if they put out a scathing PR page on a signature campaign promise. ;) Every energy source is subsidized in the United States. Coal is subsidized at the mining, transportation and generation stage. Oil is similarly subsidized...

Do we have enough hunting influencers yet?

Yup. A certain YouTube channel that hunts public has done a great job popularizing turkey road trips where the main goal is to pile turkeys up in as many states as you can in one spring without much regard for blowing somewhere up or for the residents that hunt the area. The travelling turkey...

Conspiracy against gun hunters in America?

Rifle season starts in early October in most of the west. Move there if you want earlier hunting opportunities. It's not the fault of wildlife managers that you can't handle the weather of the state you chose to live in.

Population Growth and Hunting in Rocky Mountain States

Good short article. I believe the answer to this - non resident hunting specifically - is looking at hunting license allocation through the lense of The Public Trust and its beneficiaries. Something Big Fin has really illuminated, and something that has given me a much clearer way to look at...

Iowa public trust resource for sale

I think the argument is and I think it has merit is If crossbows are legal for all it would increase hunter numbers during archery and increase the success rate. Therefore lowering the quality and quantity of the herd and possibly having to implement quotas on licenses or harvest. Many...

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

I think we need to add a third options to the October season, It is an access proposal. In the west deer come down out of the mountains to winter, like @MTTW said we are hunting them on winter range. The farther down the mountain you get the more likely that the winter range is one of those...

    Paying for Comforts with Wildlife

Lots of pie in the sky and pleasant generalities in that Whitehouse page. Can't speak as to the rest of the country, but all of the recent "green" initiatives coming from the Whitehouse have made a mess of power production and distribution in the PJM interconnection, which includes most of the...

ID refuses to send wolves to CO, joining WY and MT.

Why are you making me do your homework, Miller? As of Feb. 11, 2022, wolves west of Highways 395-78-95 are again listed on the federal Endangered Species Act and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service makes management decisions regarding harassment and take of wolves in response to wolf-livestock...

    Thank You Wyoming

A big thank you to the State of Wyoming! I put my 16yo son in for a general elk tag and he drew with 4 points. The youth prices must make this tag one of the best priced tags in the west. This will be my 7th western hunt and the first with my son. I have now booked flights and a TURO truck...

Wyoming point creep. How bad will it be for the NR elk draw this year?

If you don't have a pocket full of tags in WY as a resident you should seriously look at your strategy. Most guys crying about not drawing tags as a resident are actually crying because they can't draw those hard to draw units. @BuzzH has more tags every year than he hardly has time for it...

Knowing what I know now (I grew up in VT btw) I would. - Pay an outfitter in Canada to do a Moose hunt - I would start saving money and/or start putting in for AK sheep/goat hunts. Again go with an outfitter This will all cost you about $125k and there’s no guarantees you’ll tag anything. As...
