    As is tradition, wearing out a pair of boots and digging ticks off my ass during spring turkey. Then most likely not drawing anything to continue defying statistics. This will be year 14 of applying and have not drawn anything with less than basically coin toss odds.

    If I wasn’t trying to get a az hunt with my dad I would be trying to get one of the rut archery hunts. Plenty of “good” lower point hunts in other states to do in the interim years.

    Do a sport pilot license first. Flying has become increasingly expensive. Make sure you learn about risk assessments and make objective go/no go calls for flying. Too many people burn in.

    Stop voting for those that want to sell public land. Stop supporting influencers and wildlife pimps. Make it illegal to make any money from hunting to include videos. Make any landowner tags, depredation tags, and crop damage handouts contingent on allowing access. That would be a good start.

    Helicopters are insanely expensive. You are probably looking at $2500+ per flight hour to break even if it’s a turbine Bell 206. Bush flights are not in the same universe using light fixed wing.

    Minimum Elk Caliber. what do you think it is.

    If you have tons of opportunities, I’d use anything from the necked down 308 case and up. For morons like me who opportunities are rare. I like the 300s and up. 338 win with 225 gr Barnes will almost go end to end on an elk or moose. Never had to track elk, moose, or caribou that I shot with 338.

    Which western states have been disproportionately good to you in drawing tags?

    I have been playing the draw game since 2013. Have not drawn anything with less than 60% odds and I lived in Ak for 6 of those years. My dad on the other hand has drawn Ak bison first time applying and 3 Gila elk tags in the last 20 years.

    TSS “can” ethically get you to 70+ yards in most 20 and 12 ga with a correct choke. Longbeard XRs in 5s can get you to the 60s.
